What is different about the 8830 World Edition and the 8830IR World Edition
- Anyone know? Alltel seems to have a disclaimer on their site between ones sold before April 2008
Here is the wording used:
Did you purchase your BlackBerry 8830 prior to April 11, 2008? If yes, visit our SIM card information page. If you are not sure about your handset type, you can check the version by removing the battery and looking for a sticker labeled "international Roaming." If this sticker is missing, your BlackBerry 8830 was purchased before April 11, 2008.
I have had questions since I bought my 8830WE Alltel hasn't answered them
I bought the phone Dec.17th I was told I had 30 days to try it,to make sure I like it
Well today I contacted them ( actually yesterday ) but they told me my thirty days was up on
Jan 15th01-16-09 04:29 PMLike 0 - I have no way of knowing, All I know is I bought a new phone from Alltel and find out it is new old stock and is a 2007 then I see the ones made after April 2008 have the IR ( international roaming ) in there. I would think there is something different.01-16-09 08:55 PMLike 0
- jeffhRetired ModeratorI received my Verizon 8830 in March 2008. No sticker referring to IR in it, either. I'd never heard of it until I saw your post. I have no idea what it might mean. I'd be surprised if it's anything significant. There are lots of 8830 users here, and somebody'd have squawked by now.01-16-09 09:09 PMLike 0
- On Jan 31st. I am heading to South America
Due to my traveling is why I went with the 8830
However I just found out the next 4 countries I am going to in SA
( Chile,Peru,Costa Rica and Mexico ) is not covered or should I say my
BB 8830 is not going to work in every country I will be in .01-16-09 09:19 PMLike 0 - I received my Verizon 8830 in March 2008. No sticker referring to IR in it, either. This appears to be an Alltel issue and not a Verizon
However their merger went through yesterday.01-16-09 09:25 PMLike 0 - The salesman from Alltel called first thing this morning telling me I need to return the phone and replace it with the 8830IR I asked why and he didn't know. I told him I couldn't come in and it would be next week as I am trying to get as much info as I can , the saleman has been a straight up guy and I do like him , I just don't think he has the answers, around 1pm today he emailed me to tell me they are shipping me the phone so I don't need to come in. Again their must be something different .01-17-09 12:54 PMLike 0
- jeffhRetired ModeratorIt will be interesting to see. Things to check:
1. Options / Status / File Total: 47 841 280 bytes. Every 8830 I've seen, regardless of carrier, has had the same file total. If they changed the OS even one byte, the difference should show up here.
2. SIM card. My 8830 came with a SIM card for use in Europe. I've never taken it out of the box, and don't have it with me for comparison. If your present 8830 has a SIM card, see if the new one is described any differently.
3. OS installed. The latest officially released OS is 4.2.2.196.
There may be other items that are different, but these will be easy to check.01-17-09 01:45 PMLike 0 - Sith_ApprenticeMod Team EmeritusI am guessing this would be an unlocked version if the 8830 from Alltel is locked, or vice versa. Sprint sells their devices unlocked, Verizon sells theirs locked. It may be that Alltel is coming in line with VZW01-17-09 01:47 PMLike 0

SIM card in a Alltel phone ?01-17-09 01:50 PMLike 0 - Sith_ApprenticeMod Team EmeritusThe 8830 is both GSM and CDMA. It uses a SIM card when roaming internationally.01-17-09 01:51 PMLike 0

I will A/B them when the replacement shows up on Tuesday.
Don't know why they mailed it I will still have to go into the store to activate it.01-17-09 08:29 PMLike 0 - Sith_ApprenticeMod Team Emerituspreinstalled media could account for this. And the file total used to read the 64mb value (and in some OS versions has been removed completely)01-17-09 08:56 PMLike 0
- jeffhRetired ModeratorI removed my preinstalled wallpaper and the sample video and got more File Free, but no increase in File Total. I've never seen any other 8830 that had a different value for File Total. Makes me wonder if his is older or newer than mine; perhaps they've changed the ROM space.01-17-09 09:07 PMLike 0
- Got my answer today direct from Alltel, the phones made prior to April 2008 are Generation ONE 8830 World Editions and Alltel will not support international usage. I am then told to return my phone for the
second gen. 8830IR World Phone.
Only the 8830IR's are compatible with the WorldCell/Travelcomm SIM cards.01-19-09 12:35 PMLike 0 - jeffhRetired ModeratorThanks for sharing the follow-up. That suggests some unexpected difference in Alltel 8830's and Verizon 8830's. The change could be part of resolving compatibility issues from their merger. It sounds like it works out all to the good for you, since you get a new device. If you have a Media Card in your old one, don't forget to remove it before you return it. And do a security wipe of the phone to remove all your personal data.01-19-09 12:47 PMLike 0
