Does anyone know of a way that I can send text messages longer than 160 characters?

Yes, keep typing! It will break the text down into multiple messages.

    1. 160 characters
    2. 145 characters
    3. 160 characters

When the person receives it, it will look like this:

Text message received 1/3 (meaning 1 of 3), and then they'll get the next, and the next...

But, if you're doing over that amount, 160, why not just send an email? Rhetorical, of course...

#1 Answer... because the other person may not have a BB.

lol, yea verizon didnt lock that one, in fact verizon doesnt lock the length of SMS messages, its usually a phone restriction. my last phone (nokia) was able to send SMS up to about 500 i believe, but alas the 8830 will top out at 160, perhaps in order to persuade you to use email instead =p
