I just got out of a meeting and as usual reached for the bb to check for messages- wow what a surprise! Everything except pin messages were gone. Further checks and my call log wasa empty as well as all my coversations. I'm still receiving new messages but wondering what the heck happened and can I get any of the lost messages back?

You can't get your lost SMS messages back (well not easily).
You have a memory leak issue, first off, pull the battery with the BB powered on, and reboot. You need to do that at least once a week to clear the cache in the memory and free up space... The BB will delete your SMS and Call logs first off, to make room for incoming email, etc., sorta like eating its own to survive.
Clean out junk, move pictures to the media card, etc.
