I tried to do this and I got the message that the filename, directory name, or syntax is incorrect. What am I doing wrong?

Most likely, you made a mistake in typing the command line.

Try 'wipe handheld' - options / security options / general settings / menu / wipe handheld / "blackberry"

Am not sure if this will reset the device itself to factor settings, but it would not harm to try. Alternatively, reload the O.S
Superb sir !! it really saved a lot of time to wipe my handheld data

Unfortunately RIM often changes the menu structure with new OS versions. I no longer have an 8830 to check the path. On a 9930, it's Options / Security / Security Wipe. You'll just have to look in the various security menus until you find it on your 8830.

How do I reset a Blackberry Torch 9810 phone to factory settings when the phone doesn't boot? Is there any part of the physical phone where I can do it? (punching a little hole)
