when i try to connect to the internet on my bb it tells me there is insufficient coverage. i called verizon and they said i had to be in EVOD area. on my old phone (which i just switched from today) i was in EVOD, but now on the bb i'm not. I live a block away from the local Verizon store, so I know I should be in service area!!

Call Verizon back. You are already in an EVDO area, and if they need to check the map to figure that out, that's up to them. You'll need to work with Verizon 2nd Level Tech Support to get the phone initialized properly.
The only other thing you can do is to wipe the phone and try it again. Tech Support should be able to help you to get it recognized in EVDO.
