I have tried several sets of regular headphones (for watching videos, not for phone calls) with a 3.5mm jack using a 2.5mm adapter, and can get sound out of only one ear. I have tried 3 different headphones, and 2 different adapters. What gives? If it only works with headphones made specifically for Blackberry, does anyone know of any that don't cost an arm and a leg?

You need a BlackBerry specific adapter. It's all to do with the LSpk+ LSpk- RSpk+ RSpk- Mic+ Mic- setup of the pin that oes into the BB.
