I was given a BB 8830 on Verizon and I happen to have a Verizon number. Is it possible to activate the phone with my number without having to go to Verizon?

I believe if you log onto your online account. You should be able to do the esn change yourself.

Yes, log into your online account and go to My Phone. Then go to Change Phone. It'll ask for the ESN of the new device. Be aware that you'll have to add a BB data plan when you do this. Once done, you basically dial *228 and choose option 1 on the 8830. Wait for the provisioning to take place and you're done. Then just turn off your old phone.
