Would there be any benefit to downgrading to 4.3 instead of being on a 4.5 beta? I don't use Docs2Go, deleted it off the phone. I am currently on 4.5.0.51.

Am I crazy? Should I even be considering this? I tried searching, but I couldn't find anyone wanting to do this.

There never was a 4.3 for the 8830, at least, I don't recall ever seeing one. The latest officially released OS for the 8830 is 4.2.2.196, available from Verizon.

Ok. What about moving down to that? Any known benefits? Disadvantages?

I guess the main benefit would be that you would then have the most stable OS although some may argue that 4.5.0.77 is just as, if not, more stable than .196. 4.5 provided HTML support for mail and the ability to stream videos from YouTube so if really don't care about those two things, you could downgrade to an official carrier OS if you're having problems with 4.5. If you're having problems, try updating to 4.5.0.77. .77 seems to be the best OS for the 8830

So you would choose .77 over .101?

Yes. If you read the 4.5 Beta forum, .101 is actually a downgrade from .77. With .101, you can't play media in full screen, the memory leak is pretty bad and some are saying that the ringer volume isn't as loud (though that could just be user preference). So again, if you're planning to use 4.5 for the 8830, .77 would be your best bet for the best experience.

Yes, I am running 4.2.2.196. My 8830 originally came with 4.2.2.176.

I am looking for advice here. What would you do? Is the memory leak any better or worse with 4.2.2.196? That is my main concern. Anything after that is secondary.

I feel like I am starting to obsess about this stupid memory leak, and it is starting to bother me.

I've never used any of the 4.5 betas, so I can't compare 4.2 to them, but I've never had a memory leak problem with either 4.2.2.176 or 4.2.2.196. When I first installed 4.2.2.196, I noticed a significant increase in free memory over 4.2.2.176. That was probably due to the wipe / install clearing the Content Store. 4.2.2.196 is very stable. The folks that I see in the forum reporting memory leaks usually turn out to be running Viigo. If you leave it running in the background, it will consume all your free memory and cause problems. That's a known issue. I close it after using it and have not had a problem with it.

What size leak are you experiencing? A variation of a few MB up and down during the course of a day is not unusual.

It's a few MB up and down like you mentioned. I am above 12 now constantly, pretty much never below 13.5 to be honest. I feel like I spend a lot of time cleaning stuff out though, like SMS, Activity Logs, etc.

I am not running Viigo, in fact, I have 0 third party apps on the phone, and most of the phone has been deleted off, like BrickBreaker, Docs2Go, etc.

I should probably just leave it and not mess with it. Thanks JeffH for your input, I was hoping to get a feel from you on this.

Not to feed your obsession, 13MB is a safe level, but it does sound low if you have no 3rd party apps. I have over 17MB free and am running Google Maps, bbMaps, Viigo, gCalc, Pocket 10C SE, and Garmin Mobile, to name the biggest apps. I never clear my event log, and haven't done a battery pull in so long I can't remember it. I don't think 4.5 is THAT much bigger than 4.2.2.196. You might consider installing it, just to see what happens.

If you delete the Docs to go it is smaller than 4.2

I only hit 17 if I do a battery pull. After that, I am back down to 15 in a matter of a few hours. I usually end the day around 13. How is this possible? I have 0 apps. I delete all my texts. I delete all my emails. I clear the cache on the Browser. I close the Browser. Is the beta that much of a hog? If so, I am going to downgrade, so I can use apps.

How big is your Content Store? If you haven't cleared it lately, it may be rather large. You can clear it using the advanced tab in Desktop Manager.

I guess there aren't many Sprint 8830 users, but my mom is upgrading to this phone only because my little brother got an iPhone and switched to AT&T. According to Sprint's website, the most current OS for the 8830 is v4.2.2.322. The current OS is 4.2.2.123 which I don't think my brother every upgraded to; it's probably the original OS that he had when he bought it. I'm upgrading to .322 right now so I'll post any noticable changes before I try to upgrade to 4.5...

I tried to delete or empty the Content Store. It will not go below the number 13. No matter how many times I try, it stays at 13. Is this right? I did manage to get it down from 16.

It's not possible to empty it completely, only reduce it to its minimum, which will vary from user to user. Mine is 25 records, 5.8k according to Options / Status / Menu / database sizes.

An 8330 has 50% more memory to start with, a camera, and the ability to send and receive MMS. It's just slightly smaller, and to me a little less robust feeling, but you could quickly get used to that.

I have been using my wifes 8330 every chance I get, and I just got her step father switched over to VZW on an 8330. The more I use it/see it, the more I think I might be able to use it. I just really love the look and feel of the 8830.
