BB8830 & Verizon updated firmware
- jeffhRetired ModeratorUse Stoner's procedure and follow his link to the Verizon download site. 4.2.2.196 is the current version for the 8830.

- I was wondering if there is a safe way to upgrade to a version above the one on Verizon's site? I currently have 4.2.2.196, but would like to be working on the most current version, especially if that means the ability to use HTML formatted emails.
I've seen people directed to the Verizon site, which has the .196 version. However, I've also seen people on here mentioning that they have later versions installed and are using Verizon. Is this a common thing?
By the way, I've looked through hundreds of posts about this issue, but I have found differing and possibly outdated opinions, and that's why I'm asking this question that has been asked before in different ways.
Thanks a lot for all your helpful advice (both in advance for this post, and for the thousands of previous posts that I've learned from).
EDIT:
Just to be clear, I'm not afraid to tweak a little bit, but I am not looking to get the latest and greatest beta version. One that is stable and should work with no problems (other than the standards bugs in any release of any soft-/firmware). It sounds like upgrading to 4.5 (I'm not sure which specific version) is quite likely to fit that bill. And I have the .196 file from VZW in case I need to rollback.
So here is what I am considering installing:
A file called 8800M_PBr4[1].5.0_rel81_PL2.7.0.68_A4.5.0.55.exe downloaded from Updateservice.
It sounds like from posts by JRSCCivic98 and bmcclure937, that I can follow most of bmmclure's steps from here: http://forums.crackberry.com/f3/prop...ocedure-53359/ and be good to go. I feel more comfortable doing less and involving fewer applications with scary DOS ui's, and am willing to sacrifice some "cleanness" as it sounds like I can (from JRSCCivic98's posts on "The Thread").
My questions are:
1) Do I need to follow the steps mentioned in step 2 (http://forums.crackberry.com/f3/how-...cations-53201/) to backup software like viigo and gmail? Isn't that handled by the DM upgrade wizard?
2) Do I need to do step 7? Sounds like the memory is wiped just fine using the DM process (according to JRSCCivic98's resopnse). I'm not trying to skip steps out of laziness, but out of caution. I do not feel comfortable using JL_cmdr, especially if it is not a necessary step.
3) Is that the right file and version to use (mentioned above)? And that site appears to be in German. I assume that should not affect anything for me? Is that a stable, non-beta release?
4) Do I need a different version of DM than the one that comes from the VZW site? I have the following versions installed:
About DM General tab says Version 4.3.0.17 (Nov 12 2007), but the number is .7 (not .17) on the Components tab:
DM: 4.3.0.7
BBDevMgr: 4.0.0.1
RIM USB Driver: 4.0.0.2
RIM USB Serial Driver: 2.1.0.4
AppLoader: 4.3.0.18
RIMProgram: 1.0.0.35
Anyway, thanks again for supporting everone who comes on here.

10-09-08 12:11 PMLike 0 - There is also the following file from blackberry-dot-com:
BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.5.0.108 (EastAsia)
Package Version: 4.5.0.108
Consisting of:
* Applications: 4.5.0.81
* Software Platform: 2.7.0.78
* File name: 8800EastAsia_PBr4.5.0_rel108_PL2.7.0.78_A4.5.0.81_ Voda_Australia.exe
* File size: 71.87MB
And this site has DM 4.6 as well. Are these two perhaps the best options?
Thanks in advance,

Hope that helps...
BTW, next time check the 4.5 forums... there's tons of info in there that you wouldn't even need to ask about... just a heads up...10-09-08 02:22 PMLike 0
