I have the home screen where the signal info is on the uppermost left and the battery status is upper right. The time is in the middle. The icon in question is directly under the time. The is a numeral (1) to the left of a blue rectangle with a red star.

What is it and how do I get rid of it?

Sounds like a facebook notification.
