Vomit on my Blackberry 8820...

Had a rough weekend and my blackberry got a significant amount of vomit in it, I dried it out for two days in a bowl of rice and it works fine now; my only problem is the smell. I've wiped it down with clorox wipes numerous times but that didn't really do anything; I sprayed some perfume in its general vicinity which masked the smell for a while but it inevitably came back. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to get rid of the smell? I can't stand to talk on my bb now, strictly texting for me.

I would suggest buying a whole new housing unit and take that sucker apart and put the new housing on it.

Ew.

Any of those smoke cutters should do the trick. Those sprays that are supposed to neutralize the scent of cigarettes are just about the strongest thing you can buy in an aerosol can. If you mist it like you would compressed air, it should neutralize any negative scents coming from your phone.

Rice is a cheap/convenient alternative to silica desiccant. They will both absorb moisture from the air. Consequently, you can use either of these substrates to protect your electronic devices from moist conditions.

My BB 8800 fell in a bucket of soapy water. Honestly, it just fell by itself and I was not trying to mask any particular odour. However, in doing so I learned some things that may help you.

I took the BB apart using a mobile phone screwdriver (I even peeled apart the many layers of the LCD screen) and dried all components by a halogen heater overnight. For the most part it works well. It smelled soapy for a while and now it just smells new

I'm not suggesting everyone does this to get a clean BB, but anyway...

You can take it apart using mobile phone tools wipe down the components. Your vomit is probably on the plastic parts (trapped between keys etc.) so there won't be very much risk to the circuits

As you have not automatically attempted the above by yourself, you may benefit from a walkthrough..

1. Remove the 4 screws that are under the battery cover using a small mobile phone screwdriver (cost about $1)

2. Remove the silver-coloured side panels by pushing a plastic wedge behind them. You can use strong thumbnails or a special tool.

3. Pull the back off the BB off. The hinge is obscured at the top by the silver buttons.

4. Remove the 2 screws that have been exposed.

5. Pull the clip off the bottom of your BB. Everything else just lifts away.

The keyboard is made of a few layers that may need wiping. You can unplug the LCD screen to remove it (the plug is the less than obvious attachment of the cable to the motherboard). You won't need to dissamble the LCD screen unless there is moisture trapped inside. Moisture creates a marbled effect when the screen is switched on. If you need to, you can dissamble the LCD by first prying off the aluminium panels. Be warned that I didn't get my panels back on securely - mine are now held in place by the rest of the housing.

When reassembling the BB, take extra care to keep the screen and its cover free of dust. Dust willl not bother you until you switch on the BB and view that dust through the powerful backlight

If you buy a replacement housing on ebay (which will probably include the tools you need), beware that it might not be an exact fit and you may need to invest in a small file.
