Default Non stop data transfers + crappy battery life = huge bill !

Hi...

I've been having an issue with my device and I am wondering if it's something that you guys have heard of before.

Basically, I've been using a BB World Edition (8800 series) for about 8 months now. From day one, I installed the Google mobile pack (especially Gmail and Google Maps). Of course, I use the device to sync up with the Exchange Server at work. The biggest downloads I ever did was to download and install those apps, the occasionnal email attachement and perhaps 1 ringtone.

About 3 weeks ago, my battery started draining really fast, the data transfer arrows were blinking steadily and the device was kind of laggy.

When I noticed that, I uninstalled all third party apps, and proceeded to numerous resets (remove the battery, yaddi yadda) but the problem persisted.

I did a factory reset and now the problem looks fixed.

However, my ISP now claims I used for $5000 of data over the last month !!!
Of course, I am disputing that and it looks like I will get off the hook but I mean crap... $5000.. how could that be... I certainly didn't do this... The ISP claims that it's not due to a deffective device and they haven't seen a case of fraud of that nature in the past.

I read here stuff about cell phone towers ? It does coincide with a trip I did to a neighboring province..

Has this happen to anyone before ? what could it be ?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

I do have a data plan but it's a small one. 1GB per month.
And that's the thing. I wasn't knowingly using it... it was just doing stuff in the background somehow....

You said you were using the google aps? They use data, BBM uses data anything your phone does that isn't texting or phone calls uses data. It also didn't do it on its own you've been using data, sending picture messages something.

I said I installed the apps and used them sparingly...
As in a couple of times a week max for the occasional map search...

as for pictures, the phone doesn't even have a camera ! never transfered pictures with it...

This is why I'm completely stumped as to how it could have mounted to $5000...

According to my ISP, we're talking large data blocks, some as large as 191 mb for a single block !

That's an impossible number unless you were using it as a modem.

Call youe isp try to work it out that's the only help I can offer.

That's interesting...

What would happen if my laptop was downloading a torrent using my home wifi connection and I connected my BB with the USB cable to charge it.. ?

Would my laptop automatically draw data from the BB via the USB cable without configuring anything ?

Because, I have done this quite a bit...

No that wouldn't happen, only if you manually set it up to be your computers modem.
