Default New to BB! Internet help

So I just got an old BB from a friend, it's an 8820, and it is my first smartphone. So I plugged in my SIM card, and sometime later I received a text saying a data plan was needed for my phone, and that they added an appropriate data plan. I'm gonna go talk to them about that tomorrow, but that's not my issue. My question is, can I only use the internet when I'm connected to a local network using Wifi??? or If I'm out on the road can I still access the internet, check e-mails, etc...???? Thx

Did you talk to your carrier? Typically, data plans cost extra.

Well I had a data plan, but my browser default was set to wifi, and there wasn't wifi where I was at.
