can not delete certain emails

i have a user on the blackberry server and he has emails from a year ago that Will not delete off of his phone. he has the account setup where when he deletes the email off of his phone it stays on the server. he has deleted the emails out of his in box but they are still showing up on his phone and when you try to delete them or file them or anything they stay on in his in box on his phone. i have tried pulling the battery and seeing if they were possibly saved and neither one of those worked. he is using the 8800 with os version 4.2.1.79 on a blackberry server for novell groupwise
