Default 8800 upgrade attempt lost usage and flashing red light. No response.

Attempted to upgrade my 8800 at the recommendation of the desktop software. At some point, the upgrade stopped. Except for a flashing red light (2x stop, 2x stop...) no response from the device. I've tried several times to reinstall, including using appload and jvm (a suggestion from another user). I receive either an error message or the upload starts, runs roughly 20% and stops. My last attempt, after letting the BB sit w/o its battery for a couple of days, is ongoing. Over two hours, 20%, nothing more.

It sounds like your first failed upgrade attempt left the OS corrupted. At this point all you can do is use a program like BBSAK or JL_Cmdr or CrackUtil to wipe the corrupted OS completely off your phone, leaving an empty device. Then you can start over with the OS upgrade, then reload your data from your last backup. CrackUtil is available from the link in my sig.
