Desktop manager can be downloaded with or without media manager, get v4.6 not 4.7, it's easier to use. No it won't lock your BB updating the OS.
Crackberry is temporarily down, so I can't get you the link on upgrading your OS. Go to General Discussion/Tips and FAQ, you'll find it there along with a lot of other helpful threads.
If you go to Device Discussion and pull up your model, there will probably be a sticky at the top with the latest OS, generally with the basic instructions on installation provided.

I think you need to install OS4.5 to use the media manager, and eveb then I'm not sure it will work because the 87xx don't have removeable memory

With OS4.1 you can browse to the media/ringtones/.. directory and use the "receive using bluetooth" option.

In windows, right click a file and select "send to.." Bluetooth.

You have to setup pairing on both devices before this can work.

With system 4.5, it's easy to transfer mp3's via bluetooth. just go into Media/ringtones/accept via bluetooth, and download the mp3 you have selected.
