Not very many anymore. Its kind of an outdated phone. If you have a chance to upgrade phones and like nextel a lot try the 8350i bb. It makes the 7100 look like something from the 80's. Sorry to bash the phone, but I had the displeasure of having one for 2 years.

That bad? I was thinking of picking one up for my BB collection.

I just upgraded from the 7100i to the 8350i. Actually I really liked the 7100i but the annoying lack of a camera finally convinced me to upgrade.

I considered the 7100i for the longest time because I had nextel. However, when I had my i860 and i870, I was spoiled with having a camera. So, I got the i930 instead. After a year of having a buggy WinMo OS from 2003, the curve was announced and I finally got my berry. I love my 8350i.

How similar is the 71xx to the current BBs?

Im using a 7100i on boost, works great, cant beat getting a blackberry for $30 with all the accessories off eBay, i would have to say in mint condition + $50 for the all you can eat plan. its a surprisingly good solid phone, text, email and internet work great on boost.
I do plan on upgrading to an 8350i eventually. when the prices come down further, im not in a hurry, this does most things i need it for.

I like the 7100i, personally. I am using the BB Dimension theme, which gives me a sharp Icon look. I can do almost everything I want with this phone on Boostmobile, including reliable text messaging, OTA downloads, GPS use, PTT, online syncing of my calendar, contact list, tasks, etc. (using Google sync,) download of ring tones, etc. I am quite happy with this phone, having picked it up for under $20 off ebay and tweaked it to work very "Blackberry"-ish. I don't need a built-in camera, which is why I could not justify spending $200 on the 8350i.

Three annoyances:

1. Short battery life. I can't go through the day with one battery charge, which is why I bought an extra battery and a car charger off ebay. This is the only "major" annoyance of the three.

2. No MP3 support for ringtones. The 7100i support the .wav format. Good .wav sounds are easily downloaded or converted from .mp3 to .wav, so not a major issue.

3. No Shangmail support, which means no instant email push. Shangmail requires OS 4.2 or higher, so I am using the Gmail application, which checks for email updates every 20 minutes (and produces a vibrate and music jingle when new email has been received.)

I will probably go to the 8350i before too long, but have been quite happy with the 7100i. A solid phone with tons of features.

For anyone who is interested, I have an 7100i in mint condition available. It's been sitting around in my drawer since my Nextel days a LONG time ago. It may need a SIM chip but I'm not positive. Like I said, it is in excellent condition. I do remember liking this BB though. As I recall, I never had any problems with it. Technology was simpler then I guess.
