cannot setup google and hotmail sync

I'm trying to setup either windows live hotmail or gmail on my phone and am running into some issues; it seems that when I do the setup strictly for e-mail everything goes just fine. However, as soon as I check off to sync contacts (for hotmail) or contacts and calendar (for gmail) the setup stalls at either the activation or synchronization phase. Would anyone have any ideas as to what it might be?

I've tried battery pulls and multiple firmware reloads to no avail...

Any help would be appreciated!

Sorry, to add to my previous post; I redid the hotmail one again and this is the screen it stalls at:

Contacting server...
Verifying encryption...
Encryption verified...
Waiting for services...
Services received.
"xxxxxxxx@live.ca" is now enabled.

After this nothing happens, it just sits at this screen.

What do you want your contacts synced too?

Have you changed your default email settings in the advances options in options?
