I haven't heard anything about the 9700 getting OS 6.

I hope so. Hopefully the rumors about RIM making an OS 6 lite for older devices is true.

But would a lite version of 6 be better than what we have? Much rather have a full OS and that's what I'm hoping for with 6 and the 9700. All news is pointing to the 9700 getting 6 though.

Many many threads regarding this have been created here on CB and so far everything is speculation. RIM did show off the new Webkit Browser on the 9700 the first time it showed its face though, didn't they? It (the 9700) was even listed amongst devices said to be getting BB6 quite a while ago. Again, as others have said herein, all signs are pointing towards some version of BB6 on the 9700.

Just the same, all signs/speculation seem to think BB6 is not coming to my three beloved 9630's. Lol. - 07-16-2010, 02:42 AM #9

It probably will be getting OS6. They announced sometime before that the current generation of OS5 devices(Bold 9700/9650, Curve 8500, Storm 2 and Pearl 3G) will be getting the update. And even if they don't somebody might hack it to work on these devices.

From what I've heard/read, 256MB RAM along with the 600Mhz+ processor should get you OS6. Hence, the 9700, 9650, and Pearl 3G qualify.
Now where it gets interesting is that the Storm2 is suppose to have the update as well. Tons of internal storage, but only the 512Mhz processor from what I could tell (I could be wrong).
More interesting, to me as a Curve 8900 owner) is that the rumor of the 8500 series getting the phone. First off, the Curve 8520 got 4.5 first, not 5.0, so it is not a 5.0-->6.0 device.
Second, if it does get OS6, then internally the 256MB RAM/512Mhz processor bolds well for unofficial ports to say the Curve as the internal specifications are the same.
Anyway, from what I can tell, the Curve 8900 might have an issue with an unofficial port due to processor speed, while the Bold 9000 might have a larger issue with just available app memory. We'll know soon enough.

Considering that 9700 is considered the flagship device for RIM, as well as the fact that OS 6 was originally demo'ed on 9700- all signs point to yes. IF RIM were not to allow 9700 to upgraded. There are many new 9700 owners who would be really upset with this fact and a significant portion who would stop doing business with RIM all together.

I don't think the Storm2's processor has ever been verified. There has been lots of speculation. Given the performance difference I saw coming from the Storm1 and OpenGL support, I would be surprised if it was 512Mhz like the Storm1 was. Stranger things have happened.

It's probably a 624Mhz for the Storm2, but I can't find any information on the speed anywhere.
