Webkit For Dummies?
Can someone please tell me where I can find out what is the real significance of the Webkit or BB 6. I thought it was supposed to make the emails show up faster, but I still have to click the link to show images on my email and I dont see the difference from my 9000 to my 9800. I know its supposed to be better, but not sure if Im supposed to configure my Torch a certain way or what for a better and enhanced performance. Whatever help anyone can provide, would be helpful.
Thanks,

Let's make clear what Webkit is: a layout rendering engine. What this means is that when your BlackBerry requests to display a website, it will hand over HTML* code to the layout rendering engine, which then gives back the graphical result you are shown on the screen. The real significance is that through the use of Webkit, which is very quick to process HTML code, the BlackBerry Browser can deliver a near complete browsing experience, as if you would be using your PC to surf the Web. Of course, HTML e-mails are also processed faster, but here you won't see much gain in speed, because e-mails tend to be basic with a few images here and there, which are not complex to process by nature. Still, it might be a more pleasant experience to view HTML e-mails on BlackBerry 6 thanks to Webkit.
* HTML or HyperText Markup Language is code used to implement structured documents, or in the most popular case, websites. Websites consist of HTML code, which then instructs the browser to display certain elements in certain places on the screen, et cetera.
To "dumb it down" even further, the use of Webkit in BlackBerry 6 makes browsing faster. Is all clear now?Sent from my mind with aid of fingers - 09-25-2010, 10:11 AM

Thanks Geek, I understand that now. Just thought I read somewhere that emails were supposed to show all html_based text and images. I just hate to have to scroll and "show images" in my e-mail when that should happened immediately unloess its a virus or something.

I agree, I really hope RIM takes care of this. It should be an option to automatically download images. Or for security sakes, require a "safe list" for emails where it will download only if the person is on your safe list.
There is an app called "show me the images" for blackberry's that takes care of this. The developer is working on an OS 6 version. - 09-25-2010, 11:52 PM #5
