| | OS6 & Auto Text/Word Substitution
I am having some difficulty with Auto Text/Word Substitution in OS6, and I figured I would post my trials and tribulations.
I use Auto Text a lot, and my Auto Text database is pretty big.
In OS6 Auto Text is now called Word Substitution.
The first time that I installed OS6, and I did my restore from OS5, there was no problem. My Auto Text data went in to Word Substitution, no problem.
When I reinstalled OS6, (Hybrid, or Straight) and restored from the OS6 backup, my data did not come back. I checked the Word Substitution database, and it was basically empty. None of my custom entries were there.
I did a custom restore from the OS5 backup restoring only the AutoText database and all my custom entries were restored.
Work Around: I have resorted to using an old BlackBerry for my AutoText entries, and to create new entries. When I create a new entry, I create it on the old BlackBerry, do a backup, and restore only the Auto Text database onto my BlackBerry running OS6. Or if I am restoring an OS6 backup, I also do a separate restore of only the Auto Text from the OS5 backup.
Still with me?
Anyone going through the same thing? Any ideas?

That's crazy that you have to do that. If that's the case, you may have finally convinced me that I don't need an OS 6 device right now.

Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com | I hear you. But remember, this IS a leaked OS. I for one, enjoy finding all these little issues, finding a solution, and hearing how others deal.

So, I can assume that this isn't an issue on the official releases of OS 6?

Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com | I can't imagine that RIM would release it this way. But then again...

I have the same problems. Except in my case it's even more complicated - I use both Swedish and English on my phone (so the language is set to English but the input is set to Swedish). I type mostly in English (85%) but occasionally need to write in Swedish (15%)
So anyway, on my OS5 phone I was able to keep my Swedish autotext words (usually words that have ä, å, or ö in it) in my English autotext list. That way I could keep my language in English, have it auto correct my most common mistakes in English, and occasionally bring in the Swedish word via AutoText when necessary.
Except now, when I switch the text input to Swedish, it loads a whole separate Word Substitution database that does not have ANY of the English autotext entries. Why??? Why can't it keep it together but separated by "locale" like it used to?

I'm having the exact same problem as OP. Has anybody found a fix for this yet?
I recall a similar error with my Storm a couple of years back and clearing out the cookies seemed to fix the problem. Perhaps I will try that later and see if it helps.
I've already had to re-enter my entire array of AutoText entries once and don't wish to do it again.

I don't think there is a fix - I've heard that people on the style don't have any problems, but I got sick of it and just redid my auto texts.

After I was unable to find a fix I've been rebuilding my database one day at a time.

I've rebuilding my database but I have no clue if it can be saved or not. Currently the new entries are there, but if I look at my database from Desktop Manager it always show I only have 3 entries.

Not, not having seen any of the files, it is probably a reasonable guess that since they changed from AutoText to Word Substitution, the file entries kind of take a lil' side trip through the nearest wormhole and end up confusing the natives of UmbarrAggh 7 on their reekllAry devices.

I recently ran into this and had success with restoring from an OS5 backup file that never came over properly.
I connected the device and got into desktop manager, then on the BB I went to my service books and deleted the Desktop [SYNC] book. (This will be named differently if you're connected to a BES server, and if on a BES, Desktop manager needs to be able to connect to your BES server when doing this)
After the Desktop [SYNC] service book is deleted go into desktop manager and go to device -> delete data -> selected data. Only check the "word substitution" box, and make a backup of the device if you like with the backup checkbox.
With the word database deleted, exit the delete data screen and go to device -> restore. Pick your backup to use and then choose "select device data and settings" in the bottom of the window. In the list that appears, check the boxes for both "AutoText" and "AutoText Data Version" and restore them.
After that you should have your entries imported, or at least I did.
You'll want to disconnect and then re-connect the handheld to desktop manager once after you're done to get the Desktop [SYNC] service book back. If you cannot select the databases above in either the delete or restore section, you most likely didn't delete the service book properly. Just go into options and delete it, then open the delete or restore dialog in desktop manager again, no need to disconnect and reconnect. (And actually if you do, you can get the service book reloaded on the device again and you won't be able to perform the above tasks)
Anyway, hope this helps someone out!

| | Auto Text/Word Substitution Backup-Restrore App
There's a very useful application to backup and restore word substitution in OS 6. Just check it out here . It's an Indonesian forum, so use google translator to translate the site, but the application is in english.
