Default Map centering in BB Maps 6

This issue has been discussed elsewhere in the forums, on various Berries and OS versions, but I can't find a satisfactory answer, so I'll start fresh.

I'm running OS 6.0.0.448 on a Bold 9780 with T-Mobile USA. No matter how hard I try, I cannot get the BB Map application to center while driving (i.e., keep the arrow in the center of the screen and have the screen scroll as I move). I have good satellite coverage and good network coverage, the speed and direction indicators on the application seem to be working fine, and I can select "My Location" and locate myself just fine. But the map remains stationary thereafter, and the location arrow just moves until it's off the screen.

I've tried toggling between pan and zoom modes, North Up and Track Up modes, and hitting every key and menu button I can think of, but nothing does the trick. Does anyone know the secret here? I understand from other posters that it sometimes works, but not consistently. What's going on?
