It just happened again, wanted to send a pic over BBM and it stuck, BBM crashed and now everything from my media card has been deleted. This is happening on a regular basis, at least every 10 days now.

It has done it since 10.3.1.2582, I'm now on 10.3.2.798.

Yes I have the right SD card in. I just don't know what's causing this. It's driving me crazy. There have been lots of pics on it now which are again gone!! Everything is gone. So putting an SD card into my Z30 is useless.

What could it be? What's happening? Why is this? Does anyone have an idea?

What's the brand of the SD card? Probably nothing to do with the Z30.

It's SanDisk, Class 10. I bought it new 2 months ago since my old SanDisk has been erased so many times so I though a new might help. But it doesn't. I just did a hard reboot but still nothing.

In "Access and storage" it still tells me that it's 1.9GB used from 16GB but I can't see anything in the File Manager.

It's always the same behavior. What could this possibly be?

Edit: I've just tried to see my files on my laptop and it's all gone. So it's still 1.9 GB used but I can't see anything in my card.

Did you encrypt it? I never had issues with sanddisk. Encryption could screw it up.

No encryption. Normal use from a normal guy who doesn't harm a fly.

Just storing music, some books, Saving pictures taking from the camera on it. No porn, no viruses, no weird stuff what cannot be opened by the device.

This happened to my old SanDisk too, every seven days. This one did the same, every seven days. This time it lasted almost 2 weeks though. It is all very strange and let's me assume it's my device causing it.

Very strange. Hard to say what it is at this point but possibly it's SD tray of your Z30 is corrupting data.

Oh dear, that sounds like a tough one.

So it could be hardware wise?

That's what I think. Unless something else is at play. Never had this problem on my Z10 and used the same SD card on both devices. So that leaves me to think the SD hardware is malfunctioning.

Or you've just forget to format the card properly on your phone (not your PC) before using it. Sandisk are quite slow by the way (depends on the card size).

By the way, you can always get your media back by using a free tool like Recuva on your PC. Google it

Yes I've used this tool for my last media card, and also this one. Works perfectly Hehe.

Hmm there must be something wrong. I've formatted it properly with my phone. The moment I got this card, I put it into my phone and formatted it with it. So it all should act normally but it doesn't.

It's very weird and I'm desperate. I just hope it's not my device causing this.

What SD CARD would you recommend in terms of speed? I've always felt these SanDisk cards are a bit dragging.

It should, you're right. Maybe a bad magnetic field around ? Did you put your phone on an good old TV or a microwave for example ? Track where you put it, maybe you will find something

Now, if you can recover all your data, it means that either your head partition was screwed up somehow (magnetic field, very high voltage, phone hardware...), either... well, a software did it. Can be an app, or the indexing process in BB10 (but I guess, we'll have a lot more issue reported).

I can't recommend you one as each cards in a same brand (32Go, 64Go, 128Go, class 4 or 10, etc...) have very different speed result. You can check benchmarks online (updated frequently on "Photo" specialized websites).

Hehe no there's nothing like this both in my flat or uni where I mostly am. I don't even own a microwave, I'm a fan of vitamins Hehe.

Hmm you're right, there definitely would be more issues. I suspect BBM as it every time happened when I wanted to send a picture over BBM. Every time the same thing. I press the sending a Photo (the camera), took the picture, then pressing send only sent an empty file which expires immediately and then everything from the SD card is gone.

Hey for what it's worth, I think it's your SD card. Two months after I got my Z10 I lost everything on the card(that taught me how important updated back up was). I was still having a little hope as I saw that the card had like 2GB used but I couldn't get anything back. I formatted the card and restored my old back up from my laptop. Two weeks later, it happened again. This time I knew it was the card. I got a new one and that was 6 months ago. I haven't had any issues since then.

Sorry for your lost data, muindor. I, too, have lost SD Card data before and concluded it to be the result of incomplete formatting on the phone. I strongly advise against using the phone to format or erase the card.

Use a computer to repartition the card as an MBR disk with a single MSDOS partition using fdisk(unix) or diskpart(windows) and then FULL format it on the computer ie do not quick format it. It has to be written with zeros to stop the phone indexer from reading old data. Once you put the card back in the phone, reboot the phone so that the indexer restarts and is not using an old database.

When you connect the phone to the computer and erase files from the computer side, please think about the effects of your actions eg, if you delete the pictures folder and recreate it on the computer, this might confuse the phone indexer. It's all unfortunate, really. I just wish this whole indexing fad didn't catch on across all OS's today because I don't think it helps much and the phone is doing things in the background you didn't ask it to do.

From then onwards don't format or erase it on the phone, use delete only if you must erase everything.

As for speeds, it won't matter above ~10MB/s because that's the limit of the internal chips on the Z10-Z30 generation of devices. The Passport and Classic might have faster controllers, though. For large copy operations, use a fast SD card reader and connect the card directly to your computer.

It's good to hear that I'm not alone in this, however it's not good that this actually happens.

I will have this formatting method and hope this will never happen again. If it does I'll try another SD card for one last time.

This happened to me once as I just switched to BlackBerry from my GS4. I remember seeing a question on the screen to choose and I didn't take the time to examine properly and don't know if it would have remembered my answer for future issues but whatever I chose it did what you said. I had to take it out and reformat it in my Samsung. I have been using it in my Z30 and now my Passport for a year now and no issues. Have you used a different device to format it?

No. you're not the only one. I've had to add music and a lot of pics lost as well. No encryp or anything that was cause an issue, IMO. I've taken the card (64Gig) out and also reformatted the card.....several times. This is what I'v tried that worked for me......may/may not work for you:

I've taken the card out of my BB, plugged into my laptop using a reader to initiate the card recognition while I re-add music or pics. Then unplug after file(s) installation. Plug in BB via same USB and reinstall card. I usually go thru "file manager"- 1st, to see if the media card is displayed between Device and PC for me on my BB. No guarantees that this will work for you and I may have left out a step or two. I have a Sony Micro card.....and a Sandisk reader. Can't find the original reader- which shouldn't matter. Anyway, good luck.
