Exclamation You know, I really love the HUB but...

Day 3 of owning the Z10, and I honestly have no complaints.
No. Nothings wrong with the battery (Going 11-15 hours strong with LTE on, NFC off, Bluetooth off, and regular medium usage).
I think the only complaint I could have that's valid is why it doesn't look sexier, and why wasn't it in my hands sooner!

To the point, now. Everything about this new OS is great. Especially the Hub.
The one common complaint which I can also chime in with is how the hub returns to the menu it left off; hopefully this is fixed soon.

But, my main concern is about the Hub just being THAT good. I was looking at my homescreen earlier on and I was wondering..
Doesn't the hub make the Text Message icon redundant?
Doesnt the hub make the BBM icon redundant?
And since theres a phone call button / contacts folder + call history feature in the hub, why the heck do I need the phone call icon in the first place?

Either i'm using the hub a little *too* well, i'm being OCD about icons, or I just don't understand why both are still needed.
Through the use of the hub, I don't even need to have any basic open apps (apart from browser/other apps) in my active frames section; less battery consumption, anyone?

Thoughts? Am I doing it right?

On many phones, and especially on BB's, there are often more than one way to do something. You are right that many of these things can be accessed directly from the hub, but on the off chance that you need/want to use the screen icon that is available as well. Also, if something ever went wonky with your hub (heaven forbid) you would still be able to access key functions.

I agree with what you said aside from the BBM icon and phone history in the hub. BBM, because it has social updates and such which cannot be shown in the hub, and phone, because while hanging out in the hub, I don't need to go home to launch the phone. I do, however, agree with the text icon.... it really has no use.

Id want to keep the phone, but lets burn text messages and BBM icons and have them always running in the hub!

I just stuffed the BBM, text, phone, Whatsapp, Faceflow and Google Talk icons into a folder called "Communication". The only time I have to go into it is to start up Whatsapp (Android port).
    Blatant placeholder signature.

I think BBM should have an icon, that is because I always open it to check my groups and status updates. I dont think thats possible from the Hub.

BBM and phones icons are not redundant. Phone is to dial from, and why not have a call history and such if the icon needs to be there anyways? BBM is required to access contact list, status updates, etc. It's as necessary as Facebook and Twitter having icons. SMS I agree with you on that, but BlackBerry got rid of email icons, and everyone is complaining. I have a feeling they left SMS to appease heavy texters.

Oh, and as for the hub returning to what you were doing last when peeking, that's a known bug that will hopefully be fixed soon. Ideally, I would want peek to always bring it back to the top of the main hub area, and if you swipe to it from the home screen, it can go back to what you were on last.

In my opinion, they should make it so that swiping left on the hub takes you back to the application you peeked from. Obviously, if you swipe to it from the home screen, then it just goes back there.

Just to clear up on the phone icon, I'm talking about the one that's not built in to the home screen but the "App". The home screen phone button does the same damn thing as the app version.

Text messaging icon just opens up the hub anyway, so I'm not too sure why it was needed (I thought the whole purpose was swiping to the hub vs. not tapping icons on a home screen, am I right?)

I guess I understand why the BBM icon is on the home screen when it comes to updates or whatnot. However I'm sure with a Os update those features can also be stuck into the hub eliminating the need for the BBM icon.

Please don't take this as a rant! Just trying to figure out the most efficient way to use our amazing new devices, and I guess it varies amongst each individual.

BBM makes sense because BBM is also a separate app like twitter and Facebook as well as the hub. You could argue that the text message shortcut is irelivant because it just takes you to a part of the hub. But for someone who texts a lot they may find it easier to get to this with a shortcut than filtering the hub.

I the phone and camera icons are redundant because they exist as permanent shortcuts on the bottom of the screen.

Maybe we will be getting the ability to customise those shortcuts in a future update? I guess it is makes sense to have them there just in case.
