It depends on the requirements of future OSes. There are usually some 'jumps' up a couple of levels, but they do plan obsolescence into devices, there is no incentive to support devices forever.
They're updating the PlayBook to BB10 and it's nearly 2 years old. I expect backwards compatibility will be much better going forward, at least the two years that most phone contracts last. Depends how long it takes till we see BB11 whether it gets it, RIM might do something like OS X where every new version is just 10.something.
ya i m hoping we get new os for 2 years atleast , i expect os 11 to be out early 2014
We will see backwards compatability! probably higher than on other OSes!
rim has gone both ways in the past, more recently not allowing current devices to upgrade. but noone knows what approach they will take with bb10. not even them. its a decision that will be made once they make the new os.
anything discussed now is pure speculation.

RIM has allowed software upgrades where hardware permits. With the new OS, backwards compatibility isn't in the works because the current/old hardware isn't optimized for the new OS and would not bring a user experience that would be beneficial.
I am not so sure that we will be seeing BB11 or anything anytime soon I expect them to provide updates with a point i.e BB10.1 or to do something like Android with names i.e Blackberry Pie by the way they talk about the platform BB10 is recognized as the name of the OS in its entirety rather than BBOS with iterations of 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 etc. of course they could go either way :)
yeah thats my point. there is no indication that any new os would be compatible with bb10 devices.
as such any answer to the op question is pure speculation

Ah... I see. It may be pure speculation but I really don't think that the new devices out will be a one time OS. With updates and upgrades, they will (again, pure speculation) provide these backwards.... to a point.
you say that, but os6 & os7 show otherwise, and truth be told, with the rate software seems to be advancing it may very well be out of their hands

The Z10 will probably get a couple years worth of upgrades since it has a pretty good processor in it and 2 gigs of ram. Nothing is future proof in the mobile industry, but with these specs, the phone should be good for a while.

RIM can do what Apple is doing --- sure you can update iPhone 3GS with iOS 6, but the following features in iOS 6 will not be available to iPhone 3GS.
Depends on the audience reactions
I don't see why not. It's obvious to most why current BBOS devices can't be updated to BB10. Current BB's don't have a touch sensitive bezel, and they don't have anywhere near the required specs that BB10 requires. BB10 devices are a powerhouse, and i can see them being able to accept updates for at least 5-7 years, but I'm sure there will be future features/apps that won't be compatible. The basic framework is there, that's the important part.
Probably the crucial point for these bb10 devices with regards to getting upgrades in the future is that they will be coming with 2gb of ram, that should ensure plenty of room to grow during 10.1, 10.2 or 11, 12.
Other than the change from os6 to os7 where it was due to a lack of a gpu, the deciding factor on upgrades has tended to be the amount of memory a device had.
If RIM is smart, these devices will be upgraded. At least one more upgrade and then maybe phasing the old hardware out by taking features away and saving them for newer devices.
It's not taking features away --- it's the old hardware either doesn't have the certain hardware or that doesn't have enough CPU/GPU power to do certain things.
If RIM is smart, then they should do what Apple is doing --- sell the old phone models as cheap models (instead of discontinuing them). Today's top of the line BB10 phone will be tomorrow's Indonesia cheap phone.
The problem with that approach is that there might not be enough room to cut costs on the older phone and it only works for apple because of the higher selling prices that they still get even on the older models, rim also needs to have cheaper models available sooner than next year too.
However, that isn't always the case with Apple. Siri is possible on iPhone 4, but to make people want to get the new iPhone 4S, Siri is not available on the iPhone 4. Same with the new Apple Maps. Not available on iPhone 4, and I don't think on the 4S either. But only on the iPhone 5. In this case, most users like that (lol) but you see the idea.
Rim should do the same thing. To make people want to by the newest phone.
Are you kidding me with this??? OS10 isn't even out yet and you're already asking if you'll get OS11 and 12? Calm down and enjoy the next few weeks. A new OS isn't even on the horizon yet. Even if they're not forward compatible, you'll be buying a new device before it matters anyway.
I don't like the sound of BlackBerry11 or 12,13 etc.
Hopefully they stick with 10 and just add names to it for major upgrades.
Like BlackBerry10 Apollo and then BlackBerry10 Poseidon and then maybe BlackBerry10 Hestia and later BlackBerry10 Athena
Lol I don't know 11 12 13 14 15 I just don't like it.

I would panic once we get past 12....not that I'm superstitious or anything:D
The could keep the name as blackberry 10 for ages if they want, it just depends on how they number the os versions.
Assuming that they follow the same format as the dev alphas then the first devices will be 10.0.9.x so they have room to do regular updates as a change to that third number (10.0.10.x, 10.0.11.x etc.) and then the next major change they wanted to make could be 10.1.x.x rather than jumping all the way to 11 giving them plenty of room to decide when they want to change the name.
