I remember that when making an account to see my Gmail emails. We used to create an email very straightforward and that's it.

Now we are redirected to a Google login website and have to approve a BlackBerry App of some sort so we can access the emails.

    My question is WHY?

I think it's there because of two-stage authentication.

two step authentification... you can either copy the "App"-password, or turn the double step off in Google itself (desktop page, security settings)

Two step? So for every other company one is enough?

The way I see it is maybe the way it was before, Google had no way to determine what kind of device was pulling the data, which is good, Google doesn't have to know, I have to know.

But now, through an app, every time you pull data, Google knows that you did it through a BlackBerry device. What kind of privacy is this?

Knowing that Google shares what its users do with the local government.....

Well, I'm no expert on the matter, I don't know to what extent is this correct, but it seems kinda fishy to me to some extent.

You can disable it in the security settings of the G-Mail account being logged in via PC or on the phone/Tablet in Desktop-view (not mobile view)... PC is easier... disable it and you no longer need to recieve a short text message to log in in a foreign computer/internet coffee...
Those who made it one time on the computer, have checked the box, do not ask again, trust this computer... but have still the App requiering speacial code (only once too)... For those who trust the rest of the world and do not need to protect by sms-texting, they can disable it in the security settings!
