Wifi direct is a network connection to just a single device such as a TV or some other non router/network based device.

Miracast is technology that allows you to "cast" a device screen to another device. That is to say you can share your screen with a Miracast compliant device It's similar to chrome cast except it's a different standard.

To provide example I have a Sony 42" smart.tv. I can connect via Wifi Direct to share things from my Z30 such as pictures and videos and music. The TV will see the network share or the DNLA share on my phone. I can use Miracast to share my screen - for example I can watch a video in the browser but choose to cast this to my TV which mirrors my phone screen and shows the video on my tv.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,
    JP.
