I thought it was odd too.

They announced it with 10.2, but since it's a hardware feature, I would think they would have it at launch, or after the first update.

I'm very interested in knowing what's up with that.

OS needs to support, even if hardware already does. Playbook has hardware support, but well, won't have OS support ever...

It apparently doesn't have 'direct' hardware support since the usb port is a mini b instead of mini ab? I'd love if i'm wrong, anyone?

On the roadmap where USB OTG is mentioned it does say some BlackBerry 10 devices will need a dock.

I think all currently released BlackBerry 10 devices needs a dock, hey Bla1ze/Kris can you'll confirm if all bb10 devices currently need a (as of yet unreleased) dock? When 10.2 is released that is.. for usb otg

Edit: The PlayBook has mini usb ab but no software support..

Where's the face palm picture when you need it :/

I don't think it's an issue. Someone had the PlayBook using a otg dongle when they managed to root it.

That exploit was closed by BlackBerry.

The PlayBook has a diff mini usb (ab) compared to the bb10 phones

It may need specific BlackBerry accessories, but from the coding, it is there, just hasn't been implemented as of 810

I think the poster was referring to the issue that the phone will require a BlackBerry accessory to use usb otg.

Blackberry 10.0.0 had OS support for USB OTG. It works fine with Playbook with the betas. I could put in flash drives, keyboards, mice and so on.

The other devices don't have hardware support for USB OTG (the spec). If they are getting usb host mode, it's not through that standard.

All currently released Blackberry 10 devices.
Not sure about unreleased ones like A-Series. I am hopeful

Z10 and Q10 could do usb otg, but they would need to go through some form of dock or adapter.

Excuse my ignore but do you know, would it have to be proprietary or do dongles like this exist for other devices?

The dongle/adapter would be proprietary. The connection on the other end could be standard USB OTG.

    Playbook doesn't need that dock/adapter.

Just reading up on USB OTG and the cables and whether it is hardware/software enabled on BB10.2. I read up on the specs on Wikipedia with respect to Micro-AB and how the cables are designed to allow certain connections only with Micro-A vs. Micro-B, since otherwise people would try to connect host/slaves in the wrong way or do damage. As well, pin 5 also is used for the ID on either floating or grounded, or 3 resistance states in between to specify various charging-power configurations.

So the question is, is it possible to make your own dongle by soldering up a micro USB plug to a regular USB female plug that would allow insertion of a Flash device or some other peripheral? Basically, it is a matter of the dongle being a physical issue which could be made at home using readily-available parts, or will the dongle actually require some kind of active component like a microchip? Or will the dongle or "dock" simply supply POWER to the USB peripheral being plugged in, so it is not tapped off the phone itself? In that case, someone could just make the external 5V supply needed to feed power to the peripheral, and connect the data lines to the phone, and wire up the ID pin in a way that would tell each end what is going on.

Would be nice to see a schematic and hack for something like this:

    http://makezine.com/projects/usb-otg-cable/

Looks like you need to connect RED-RED, BLACK-BLACK, WHITE-WHITE, GREEN-GREEN, and the BROWN (pin id) connects to the BLACK to make it a Grounded to identify as an OTG cable. Actually here is a better link than the one above (which doesn't seem to discuss the sense pin #4 being grounded):

I just built an unpowered cable but it doesn't work. I am going to see about adding power and seeing if that helps.
