In 2012 there were a handful of previews and demos for BlackBerry 10. Has anyone ever taken the time to look back at them at see what are some of the things that were demoed or previewed but never made it into the final release? Well, here are some of them...

    1. Look at the curved icons for Reply, Reply to All and Forward. Also notice there is no blue separator line for the back button.

To be honest, I'm sorry these icons didn't make it.

    2. Look at the bottom-left key on the virtual keyboard.
Things that never made it into BlackBerry 10-vlcsnap-2014-01-04-11h34m16s104.png
Personally, I prefer the final one.

    3. Notice there are icons on the Active Frames. Also of note, there is no navigation bar for your app pages etc. under the Active Frames.
Things that never made it into BlackBerry 10-vlcsnap-2014-01-04-11h35m17s222.png
I guess for me, it doesn't really matter either way.

    4. There was a "Universal Inbox" which eventually evolved into the "BlackBerry Hub"
Things that never made it into BlackBerry 10-vlcsnap-2014-01-04-11h36m32s111.png
This one is a nobrainber. The Hub is many time better.

    5. The Peek Gesture for notifications was originally on the right side.
Things that never made it into BlackBerry 10-vlcsnap-2014-01-04-11h36m43s196.png
It seems more natural for my eyes to fall on the left side of the device during a peek. That could just be my familiarity with the gesture as it is though, so I can't say for sure if one is better than the next. What I can say, is I prefer my Hub to the left and my Apps to the right.

    6. Whatever happened to this multi-layer peek?
Things that never made it into BlackBerry 10-vlcsnap-2014-01-04-11h37m20s243.png
Originally, if you opened an email from the "Universal Inbox" and then opened an attachment from within that email, when you did the peek gesture, it allowed you to see bits of not just the message, but also the inbox. Having not used the feature personally, I can't say how practical it was in terms of screen-sizes etc. but I can say that it look really cool.

I'll be looking for more features that never made it, and updating this thread accordingly, but this is what I've found so far. Please feel free to add anything you found, or share your views on what was already discovered.

    EDIT #1
    7. App Grid to the left of Active Frames. Hub (Universal Inbox) to the right.
Things that never made it into BlackBerry 10-vlcsnap-2014-01-04-14h22m39s144.png
Things that never made it into BlackBerry 10-vlcsnap-2014-01-04-14h23m07s212.png
This was implied before but not pictured so here it is. Would take a lot of getting used to now, but I suppose if this is what were launched it would seem natural then.

    EDIT #2
    8. The Hub as we know it today was called MailBox with a grey Top Header
Things that never made it into BlackBerry 10-vlcsnap-2014-01-04-17h25m57s34.png
Not a big change. Still pretty much the same Hub and functionality.

    9. There was a drop down menu from the Title Bar in the Calendar, like how the Hub works
Things that never made it into BlackBerry 10-vlcsnap-2014-01-04-17h32m56s122.png
Although this is absent now, we do have a left side menu that wasn't there before. However, this drop down has an option called "People" which the Calendar current appears to no longer have.

    10. There was a "People" option in the Calendar to see all the people you had meetings with in a particular day.
Things that never made it into BlackBerry 10-vlcsnap-2014-01-04-17h37m53s56.png
this looks like a pretty cool feature to have.

    11. Notice the Grey title bar in BBM
Things that never made it into BlackBerry 10-vlcsnap-2014-01-04-17h41m05s202.png
Not a big change. And it seems this was a system wide change and not just a BBM thing.

As I can only attach 12 images to a post, I will continue the list further down the page.

You can still do the multi layer peek l, you just have to do it from the back button instead.

"Never" made it? 10.2.1 is still in development.

True but some of these things will never be added. Can you imagine the confusion that would be created if they moved the hub to the right and the app grid to the left at this stage?

I like the look of the universe inbox more than the hub (look not function)...

I like how it looked more rounded with the gray header, the icons resembled those the legacy BlackBerry OS ... and the names were more proximal..

    I actually like that more...

The multilayer peak was mostly just a show off I think, no real practical usage, if you're in an attachment and want to see the email again do the normal peak, if you want to take a look at the hub do the root peak, so function isn't lost there..

Hey OP thanks for doing all that work. It was a nice trip down memory lane. Remember how excited we all were about the upcoming BBX?

    Good times

Looks like the original universal inbox was made in Adobe air. Thank goodness they didn't stick with that (the original settings app was air, and the PlayBook keyboard was air - so incredible slow to use!)

Continuing the list........ (see #8 - 11 in the Original Post)

    12. BBM Chats had a lighter background and the bubbles were completely outlined with a thin colour
Things that never made it into BlackBerry 10-vlcsnap-2014-01-04-17h41m47s111.png
I prefer the way it is now, with a better contrast between the bubbles and the background, and the colour only to the bottom of the bubble.

    13. Notice the "Ping" option in the bottom bar when viewing Emoticons on the keyboard.
Things that never made it into BlackBerry 10-vlcsnap-2014-01-04-17h43m00s69.png
They had 'Attach', 'Ping' and 'Send'. Currently we have 'Invite More', 'Attach' and 'Send'. Personally, I would prefer the 'Ping' option on the bar rather than in the overflow, because I use Ping a lot more than I invite more participants.

    14. See how big the icons were in the App Grid before
Things that never made it into BlackBerry 10-vlcsnap-2014-01-04-17h48m28s189.png
This was just ridiculous in my opinion, but I like the fact that it gave the OS a unique look.

When did they remove this? I can still remember seeing it. May have been on the DevAlpha.

Toast notifications, right? Or some other fancy name. Yeah, they decided not to, said it was not actually useful (and I agree hehe).

This is still on the table, not as a system thing but a developer option to integrate into apps.
