With BB Balance, is it possible to do a security wipe on only the personal side or only the work side?

    No.

The Work space is encrypted and the key is protected with the password. If you remove the work account you remove the work space. The filesystem is however not wiped. I'm not that deep into the security but I would *assume* the encryption key is wiped when you remove the workspace. If this assumption is correct, all you can find is an encrypted filesystem and you would have to bruteforce the encryption key to recover the information.

A security wipe will overwrite the storage containing the personal + work space completely.

The administration of the BES managing the work partition can wipe the work partition before disconnecting the device from the BES without affecting the personal partition. This is one of the primary use cases for Balance and the"bring your own device" model.

The term is "Delete only work data". I doubt it does anything else than removing the Work account on the device.
"Delete all device data" on the other hand initiates a wipe and returns the device to factory defaults.

I would have to look at the documentation to be 100% sure, but if it doesn't do a FIPS compliant deletion then Balance wouldn't be suitable for most government and a lot of business applications.

I was hoping there was some easy way to remove the data from the personal side of my work phone.

Check with your BES IT support, but I would think that if you did a secure wipe on the personal partition it would just erase your personal data. In any case the BES should be able to replace any data in the work partition.

If the encryption key is deleted (wiped) there is only bruteforce left to recover the encryption key. As far I as know AES-256 encrypted data are still very, very hard to bruteforce.

If you do a wipe only work data it takes very short time, so I doubt it overwrites (wipes) the storage device for work data.

No. Only the opposite. If you wipe your phone, you wipe it completely

What you say is correct and makes sense.
