A total joke when you can get one for $400 in Europe. It's usually much cheaper to buy electronic devices in the US...

I got my Z10 on release day on TMO for $530. Best purchase in a long time by the way. But yeah I'd have guessed closer to $400...maybe $350.

Unfortunately the way U.S. carriers work no, and that's what is a bit confusing to me... The U.S. carriers are not launching this phone, but someone can buy it unlocked full price and use it here, as it does have regulatory approval. I could understand a certain price tag solely if it were to only be subsidized away, but that's not what will be happening here, this is just a bit hard to digest, although believable...

Well the "tier" system I think many of us, including myself, is comfortable with is shifting here and will be into the beginning to mid-2014-ish time-frame. If BBRY chooses the path that they have with their touch lines, then the Q5 will be the low end, the Q10 the mid range, and device X the higher end physical keyboard phone. It was mentioned that the Q10 was the flagship device, and that there was supposed to be a "high-end" model by mid-this year, but that was almost a year ago if not slightly farther back, and right not the Q10 is the only physical keyboard phone. So, I guess we'll just have to see what's next to know where it really fits... You can't really have a mid-range phone when you only have two that can be compared...

Well we aren't talking about the Q5 being released by carriers here in the U.S., but the device can still be purchased and used here in the U.S. it recently went through FCC approval...

This is fully unlocked, if you read the article, it shows the prices for the Z10 and the Q10 unlocked. The Q5 should be about 300 dollars on a prepaid plan. I dont think this phone will go to the bigger name companies like verizon, Sprint, etc. More towards Boost Mobile, Straight Talk, etc.

No, the subsidy is usually -$400 with the exception of the iPhone. Apple negotiated special terms so the carriers pay more for an iPhone while maintaining the $200 w/ 2yr agreement price tag.

For example, the Nokia Lumia 920 was $450 off contract and $50 w/ 2yr agreement. So if a carrier were to pick up the Q5, it would be ~$75 subsidized.

The prepaid carrier subsidy is not $175. It is difficult to give an exact figure since prepaid phones are often carrier exclusive; but, a ballpark estimate is definitely <$100. Probably $0 to $50.

If correct, this is a ridiculous price. You can buy the Z10 unlocked, no contract for almost a $100 less here.

People. Stop comparing the Q5 to an older product such as a Z10. The Z10 is an older product and has suffered a price drop (and that too a huge one). In a few months, it is very likely that the Q5 will also get its price drop and be a little cheaper than now.

Why do you complain when its competition such as the S4 mini will be selling for a higher price.

The $475 they mention sounds like the price you'd pay from an importer like Expansys, which always tend to be pretty high. It doesn't say that the phone is actually for sale from BlackBerry or any US retailer for that price, just that it's the "average" that you'd pay for one.
