RIM needs to give us cloud storage
With the launch of BB10, I think RIM should include 5GB of cloud storage for each subscriber.
They've already got the datacenters, just toss in a few hard drives. Storage is cheap.
I'm really not much into the "cloud computing" thing, I find it all too disjointed and discombobulated, but I'd really like a simple way to share files between my home PC and phone and PlayBook.Heins: "We have only one opportunity to get this right".

My sources tell me they are. Shhh.

Just completed a survey in the Beta Zone that was focused on storage on your PlayBook and phone compared to your computer.

I use Sugarsync to sync 4 computers and 9800 and foldersync on my PB. Works real well.

I would be shocked if BB10 did not include this. I'm sure it will.

i never understood the cloud feature. personally i would not want to use up my bandwidth just to store stuff from my phone to my PC. i'd rather just sit down and transfer everything from my phone or playbook to my PC, its worked well thus far it'll work well for years to come

Well there has to be a better way to get files back and forth than plugging my phone into the PC and copying files manually or going through the nightmare BlackBerry desktop software to "sync" it all.
I don't particularly like "syncing" files either, but when all I have with me is my phone I want a way to get to photos or documents on my PC.Heins: "We have only one opportunity to get this right".

I did think RIM had that in mind with Newbay but it has been a while since we heard anything new from that.
I agree that RIM needs to bundle cloud storage with the BIS subscriptions to enhance the appeal of the service. BIS has been unchanged for a while now.
BlackBerry Protect backs up data to a certain degree. How about extending it into cloud storage? We are sort of lagging in this area.Technological progress is like an axe in the hands of a pathological criminal.

Good idea, though I still tend to lean towards cross-platform solutions.
On the other hand, a proprietary cloud storage solution is an excellent way to get subscribers to stay locked into RIM's ecosystem. - 06-23-2012, 01:56 PM

I think I trust RIM's data security more than I trust some of the other could storage providers however.
There have been many times where I've wanted to read an email saved in Outlook on my PC but I can't get it from my phone. If the BlackBerry Desktop Software could be set up to allow remote access to files, emails, etc... from any of my BlackBerry devices, I'd be quite happy.Heins: "We have only one opportunity to get this right".

maybe they could bring out something that is similar to a cloud feature but is manually controlled, and you have to tell it to cloud this particular file.
my whole concern with the cloud feature is bandwidth, with all these phones using cloud it not only takes a toll on your bill but also on the servers of your mobile network as well as the RIM servers slowing things down for others - 06-23-2012, 04:17 PM

They don't even really need to provide cloud storage - just give me a way to access files on my PC from my phone and PlayBook. Easily done through the Desktop Software.
I hate "syncing" as files always managed to come fall out of snyc and you end up with three versions of the file, but a way to log in and get anything I want from my PC would be great.Heins: "We have only one opportunity to get this right".

Yeah they need to do something Similar with Cloud Storage like the T-Mobile Commercial where the Woman is about to get on her bike and she finds a song straight from the Cloud and streams it right to her device.

In the past couple of months RIM has quietly hinted that it will be leveraging Newbay to provide cloud service, though they've been coy about what exactly will be available to consumers. They've DEFINITELY committed to putting BES in the cloud for the corporate customers who want it there.

I hate to be a spoilsport, but I think this whole could business isn't global as yet. Trust me, here in India, 3G was recently rolled out and it's expensive; we don't have 4G/LTE as yet.

Something selective being uploaded/downloaded/streamed to the device via a cloud would help immensely. With the usual RIM efficiency, a cloud solution which is always active will hog the battery with constant data packets being sent over the network. - 08-18-2012, 09:30 AM #19
I would find an integrated cloud service for pictures pretty useful. I snap a shots on my Canon, PB and 9800. It is too much work right now dowloading to my computer, aggregating all the photos then uploading the photo to my phone and tablet to show them to friends and family.
I like the iCloud solution with one major exception, automatic uploading of every pictures. Some pictures should never ever be uploaded anywhere.Last edited by Just Me; 09-22-2012 at 09:55 AM.

Personally I think cloud computing is the best thing since sliced bread. It allows for a lack of both hardware and location dependency. Those who are currently reluctant I feel will warm up to it as time goes by.

Yep, I am fond of cloud computing too. I understand the reluctance with regards to security, but for folks like me who work in environments that openness is an advantage anyway, cloud computing is gold.

Re: RIM needs to give us cloud storage
Are we talking about cloud storage like DropBox/SugarSync or an automatic backup solution like BlackBerry Protect, or both?
I think we're most likely to see something like BlackBerry Protect on BB 10, which is a pretty standard backup solution but nothing special.
Nothing comes close (not even Android) to Apple's iCloud, it backs up virtually EVERYTHING, - although I believe the developer has the implement this - iCloud can back up your app data and games data, not to mention notes, contacts, calendars, text messages, email, music, photos, icon arrangements, etc. The best wireless complete backup solution I've seen yet. - 10-21-2012, 07:20 AM #25
