Can't we petition BlackBerry to provide OS update based on where we purchased the device rather than current carrier. If we buy unlocked device why does it need to be carrier dependent for updates.

Because the carrier receives the service calls, and BlackBerry doesn't carry enough weight to force their hand on upgrades.

My argument against this is that when you are travelling you might get the update anyway. So the carrier has to support calls when you are back. The whole thing seems just a method for carriers to decide fate of OS.

I'd love that, but I doubt it will ever happen.

This is why I made Sachesi. You can update to latest whenever you want. The other alternative is grabbing a bunch of prepaid Sims from different carriers.

Which do I choose to update - upgrade or debrick?

    Upgrade if you're updating non-destructively.

    Debrick is for creating autoloaders.

I'm too much of a chicken to use a leaked OS. My Z10 is my only phone. I have no land line as a backup. If anything should go wrong I'd be screwed big time. I just can't take the chance.

There is a totally safe way to do this, i've been doing it for many years now on both bbos and bb10: be patient. Wait a couple of days after a leak is posted, check out what people say and jump on it if most of them are fine. Also, another advice: if you do install a leak, specially when the jump in versions is big (like from 10.3.0 to.10.3.1) don't restore. Perform a clean installation and it will be cool.

If you're using Sachesi to access another carrier's official release, technically it's not a leak.

As for not restoring, a lot of people are like me, and that's not an option. There are too many things I rely on I have to restore, such as word substitute and browser bookmarks.
