Wouldn't it be possible if BlackBerry pushed OS updates through BlackBerry World? I've seen bar files that update sections of the os, so couldn't blackberry just consider it to be 'an application ' part of its blackberry world category and just bypass carriers?

Technically they could but I dont see it happening. The way BB updates its phones is the same as its always been for the most part. Its going to be a huge change if they do it the apple way

This is something that Blackberry needs to negotiate with carriers. Obviously they can't get a deal like Apple has with the carriers, but maybe they don't need exactly that. Maybe they can agree with the carriers to some core OS (more than just the base band) that the carriers approve, with all the remaining parts being upgraded as needed by Blackberry directly.

Wasn't this modularity part of the story of why RIM bought QNX to begin with?

I think with bb10, OS updates can be pushed out directly from BlackBerry. I think this is what happened when BlackBerry met with AT&T.

Rim - We can push out os updates on your behalf.

AT&T - Like he** you are! We will tell you when you will send out updates. Yes, you will do all the work and we dictate the release date. BTW, we don't want to pay service fees either. BTW, we are 100% behind your bb10 launch. Now you can say without lying that you have tremendous carrier support.
