Exclamation No more BIS required for BBM / Browsing / Email

    People.

There is very little information in the public domain about this - even the phone stores in the UK are a little thin on the ground with this knowledge. As a Z10 owner I thought I would try and make this information available so that people have it on good authority.

I have a standard UK data plan - same as you get on an iPhone or Android device. I am using O2 and the APN is something like "mobile.o2.co.uk". I do not have BIS or BES services on this tariff.

Having put my SIM card into the Z10 in the Phones4U store, it seemed as if the BIS service was needed - no little BlackBerries in the corner. Once on Wifi however they popped up and BBM and browsing worked as expected. Turned off Wifi and boom, they disappear. Then I went into the Settings and found this under the "About" -> "Network" screen:

    IMG_00000009.jpg

I selected to register and nothing happened... initially. About an hour later I was showing a friend the phone and it locked up solid - we LOL'd and did a battery pull. After the phone came bacl online - on 3G I had the BlackBerries back! BBM and browsing were working fine (and very fast)

To be honest with you, I think pressing register blackberry was coincidental. It would've worked by itself if you had waited, I'm sure.

I am not sure, having spoken to O2 about it they informed me that there is now a platform within their network for BB10 devices to use and that as I have an existing SIM it would need to be added. Either way, it works now and BIS is not on my tariff.

ok so letme try and understand this.... IF you have a BIS plan with your provider you will be able to keep it and nothing will change. If you dont have a BIS plan you can still use the data with the plan...

from what ive been hearing is that if you have a BIS you will loose it for a regular plan. but you are saying that OS 10 works on BIS and non-BIS plans??

This is a great thing for me. As a frequent traveller to the US it was a pain to use a BB. The CDN plans are expensive while roaming.
I currently use a Roam Mobility SIM in my older unlocked 9700 for calls and SMS but had to use a hotspot for BIS/BES services. Hopefully on Wed I will be able to unlock my phone and switch SIM's and be able use the phone only! Just like my other fruit carrying friend.

But why would you keep a BIS plan? It does nothing.

So, does it mean providers still have some kind of BIS thing within their networks to deal with new BB10 devices and provide real PUSH and stuff, but users DON'T HAVE TO PAY for such kind of BIS anymore????!!!!!!!

I would keep my BIS/Smartphone plan cause it allows me 6GB of data. Just cause the plan itself includes the BB Enabler allowing BBM, but the device itself would not use the RIM errr BB NOC to transfer data such as web pages or emails. That would be my reason for keeping my BB data plan here in Canada. But that won't be for a while as I just got my SG3 recently.

    I see no more BIS.
I've a PAYGO Sim in O2 network (of course including mobile data), so no more BIS means, I just need to put my sim in and I can use everything in the phone?
And Am I need to set up APN, or don't need?

Default Thank you for Sharing this info!

For those of us in the USA who are looking forward to BB10 this is a relief to know.

Been with iOS and still am, but still respect BB. Obviously, BBRY knows what to do to win over more from other devices.

I have an unlimited BIS plan. Will I still be able to surf the web and not be charged for data? From what i understand, as long as my data goes through blackberry.net i won't be charged. I'm just confused.

I believe this would be fine, APN will be populated automatically for you (mine was, I'm on O2)

I does seem this way, which is a good thing in my view. I guess the network has to support BB10 so maybe some clarification from providers is needed!

for O2 in the UK they have to activate a BB "bolt-on" - they (O2) messed this up with my upgrade (which also needed a new micro-SIM).

Can confirm that BB icon has been live for 2 days now and BBM/internet/email all working

    - Avid fan of BB 9700 and 9850 - the 5mp camera addition made life so much easier (even though it was fairly crap!). Waited a long time for a Q10, including being 5 months past my 'upgrade' date from the carrier - lost my nerve and got the Z10 1st Feb 2013. Probably switching back to a 9900 while I wait for OS fixes/upgrades. Proud Londoner (that's in the UK, guys!)

Why would you need a BB bolt-on? There is at least thread here (I'm off to bed will find in morning) where someone just popped in their 02 sim (on normal contract) and everything just worked.

great question - but it seemed critical to making mine work

in other news, if you say to O2 you're thinking of leaving, they'll up your data allowance to 2GB per month, free of charge

There is no extra requirement. If some sort of BIS exists then it is not linked to your tariff. On O2 UK at least, you shouldn't be paying anything more than for your iPhone/Android data services. Until and O2 rep confirms otherwise, my experience is proof of this - I do not have any BIS/BES on my tariff whatsoever.

Just to be clear on this though - there is something within the operators network which allows data to flow for browsing/BBM - just not something you pay for, nor it would seem have to register for (on O2 at least)

My understanding of it is thus:
First time Blackberry phone owner (I have a playbook and my two kids each have a BB for which I pay an extra £5/month each so they can use BIS (I think?))

I went into O2 (as that's what we're all on) and bought from them on a 2 year term a Z10. Paid £36/month for the privledge. When we were going through the buying motions, the rep did indeed have to add the "free" 1Gb data bolt on - it appears that the new blackberry phones are now just deemed as a "smartphone", a-la Samsungs etc, where they build your data plan with these bolt-ons. I've presumed (and please feel free to correct me) that web browsing, text, BBM etc now just went through the normal data plan and that the web usuage (and BBM?) would come out of my 1Gb data allowance? I am interested to hear otherwise, especially about BBM usage - is that "free" in terms of data usage? What about things like BBM Video over 3G? Would that come out of my data plan?

I'm more curious about experiences with T-Mobile. I can't exactly change to any other network as my Nokia Lumia 920 is EE-locked (even though I bought it outright... screw you exclusivity!) and Orange/EE have no unlimited data, only T-Mo. However I would be interested in getting a slider BB10 should my finances allow it within the next year or so.
Damn it! Wanted my phone history image signature here! Damn no BBImage code for signatures rule
