I'm not a big fan of GPS maps and don't use online navigation a lot. Especially I don't trust blindly on that.

I'm old fashioned. When I arrive in a new city (like Hamburg some days ago) I go into a tourist information and get a city map on paper.

What I never expected was that the Compass app could indeed be useful for some purpose. I pulled my Z30 out of the pocket indeed four times in only two days to get the north direction. "Where is north?" is sometimes a reasonable question in an unknown city where you use subterranean traffic systems a lot. When you then get up to the air again you have tall buildings around hiding the sun and you walk into a wrong direction ... The magnetic Compass, a tool from the analogue age, is what the 21st century common man needs

BTW: I had several outages with that. Sometimes the magnetic compass is blocked in it's position until you cause a GPS request. After this request the needle works again, also without GPS.

Well this little guy's are live saver, a Francis Barker M73 compass, dumped my Garmin Montana 600 but would never go without a compass!
Yeah all the Nav apps on BlackBerry come in handy but wouldn't work after 24 hours without juice and a Garmin will die after only 8 hours.
But most importantly is common sense, which most folk in our high tech world this day never seams to develop. :P

Looks solid as a rock. What's the white instrument on the upper picture, a baro(alti)meter?
