I have a Z10 and a Z30. Both running 10.2.0.429. The Z10 will play a MKV file but the Z30 will not. I would have thought it was a software issue. Is it hardware related? Does anyone know.

    Thanks

If I'm not mistaken, the Playbook won't either. I have to convert them to mp4 to get them to work properly. Frustrating.

My PlayBook won't either, but with the same OS on the Z10 and Z30. I would expect them to either play or not play.

May have to related to hardware encoders and decoders built into the devices. I'm not sure what dedicated encoders are on these blackberry devices though. Generally it's considered best to use the hardware decoders for battery life reasons.

If anyone knows what formats the hardware decoders can handle please post up, would be nice to know what the most efficient format is.

MKV files are containers, and they can accept diverse video or audio compression formats into them. So, if the MKV file contains supported video and audio formats, it will play. If not, it won't be played.

This applies to Z10, Z30 and, of course, Playbook.

Well screw me...I just saw this *after* I sold my Z10 and got a Z30. This is unreal. BlackBerry truly can't do even one thing right. This is just incredible, and not in a good way. What a bunch of tools.

Open the MKV file in VLC or something and check AV encoding details. AC3 support was removed post 10.1 ( not sure which exact 10.1) Z30 came default with 10.2 so any file which uses non supported encoding format won't be supported. On Z10 there was a way to retain this support even after upgrade to 10.1 but with 10.2 it clearly gives a message post upgrade saying media format database issues were fixed - basically support to AC3 and other (unknown) formats removed.

It isn't BlackBerry fault - it has everything to do with patents, royalties negotiations.

Not everything is available for buying even if you have resources to buy it.

BlackBerry hardware does support all of this. They don't have license to allow software to support it.

For Audio I bought Neutron player which does support AC3 and much more. I am sure there will be something for Video as well.
