Default How much better or different is BB10 compared to BB Tablet OS 2.1?

I know the question is general, but I'm very curious how BB10 will be THAT different from the current software available on the PlayBook. I understand that both are QNX-based. I've always thought that the PlayBook is a mere precursor to BB10. Aside from the BB10 Hub, unique gestures, and native apps like the browser and email, is BB10 going to be THAT much better? I seen many demos and am as excited as anyone else here. I'm just curious if Tablet OS to BB10 is simply an incremental update or is it an entirely new OS.

I think that while it will be somewhat similar, the experience will be totally different.

You're right in that the PlayBook is, essentially, a precursor to BB10. I love my PlayBook to death, and the 2.0 update and every subsequent update has made the PB feel more finished, but there is still that element of incompleteness surrounding it. You just get the sense that it is an oversimplification of something much better to come. BB10 is that "something". It is the fully finished product of what the PlayBook OS is. BB10 will have everything that the PB has with the polish, stability, and features that its still lacking.

So, to fully answer your question, there is nothing incremental about BB10 at all. It will be a completely new experience and the only thing I see carrying on from PB to BB10 is the gesture-based navigation (and even that changes a bit).

Better UI with more consistent in-app navigation. Much better performance. WAY shorter boot (Dev Alpha now boots in about 1 min, vs the 3 or so for a PlayBook--will likely improve even more before launch). Virtual keyboard that will finally convince many physical-kb die-hards to switch. VERY nice integrated app/music/vid store. Native BBM with integrated video chat. I could go on.

BB10 on the PlayBook will probably be much like you'd want a good 3.0 update to be, plus a much better selection of system apps.

At a system level, we can finally expect support for USB-connected peripherals (e.g. Ethernet adapters, game controllers, presumably flash drives), DLNA, and presumably other such things.

Performance-wise it should be better than half the boot time, and generally faster overall. Many things have been rewritten, heavily optimized, overhauled and fixed.

The preinstalled apps should be much improved... I'd really expect to see a far more usable Adobe Reader, beefed up "ToGo" apps, native (Cascades) versions of all the standard stuff that's a bit sluggish right now (Clock, Calculator, etc), and many more new ones.

And services. They want to replace the service revenue with income from optional BB10-related services. I'd expect a batch of cloud-based services that would really add some extra value to the tablet, compelling enough that I'd be happy to pay reasonable fees for them. I definitely want to see tight integration between my BB10 devices through the cloud, so my media files are easily available on both, specific apps can synchronize transparently between my phone and tablet, data is backed up, and so on.

You might call all of these incremental. I expect them to make it feel like we all just got brand new tablets.

I'm looking forward to the PlayBook shedding its AIR based UI. I blame most of its instabilities, freezes, and lags on the amount of Adobe AIR running on it. I haven't experienced any of those problems on the dev alpha. The Android player on BB10 will be much more stable/better than on the PlayBook OS2.0 (although the latest build seems to have some slight issues).

I think the playbooks os10 will have some minor differences then the phone os. If you want to compare the phone os10 with os 2.1 on the playbook, then the difference is night and day. From the week I had using a demo bb10 phone, the bb10 os is extremely smooth. really the only things I can think of that are similiar are a few of the gestures and the linking of contact information. The browser on bb10 is ridiculously fast (I was only able to use it on wifi). The os is extremely smooth and has nice transitions. I really liked the keyboard on os10 too. Once I had to give it back, I did appreciate having my playbook knowing it will eventually have bb10.

I don't remember PB looking like the "flow" of BB10 as it is, but who knows. I suspect BB10 is going to be as different to present PBOS as PBOS is to our beloved, traditional BBOS. We'll know soon enough

I also found it sort of silly that people were all like "boohoo, nobody is developing apps for the playbook, even though blackberry is trying to encourage them to do it" (netflix, skype, etc?). But then, RIM didn't even bother to port some of their major apps over to it either. Blackberry Travel, Maps, Protect? Oops, I guess the porting process isn't as easy as they'd like people to think...

Porting from BBOS is a lot different then porting from iOS and Android.

By the looks of it, several orders of magnitude. BB10 seems to correct every complaint I've ever had about my PlayBook, though I have qualms about app design, app support and the active frames. I'm also curious as to how thoroughly they've addressednthe issues with the PlayBook's keyboard.
I'm trying to be nicer. If I say something that's not very nice, feel free to remind me
