    I would rather not use an app, but I do not want anyone outside of my circle of friends and associates to be able to call me or send SMS messages to my BlackBerry 10 OS phone. Is there a workaround?

    Use Parental Controls! Not something I would think about doing first, but if you turn on Parental Controls you have two tick boxes: "Phone calls from contacts only" and "Text messages from contacts only". Selecting these options will allow only people in the Contacts application to call or text. [System Settings --> Security and Privacy --> Parental Controls | Switch Parental Controls on and tick both boxes]

    Best way is to use the app BlockIT from BlackBerry World. Great dev and well-supported app with regular updates and does a heck of a nice job blocking calls from persons who aren't in your contacts.
