    They aren't used only by ios. They are sort of an international standard for emoticons.. I think they were started by Japanese carriers

    Indeed, they are an international emoticon standard that originated in Japan. Apple helped popularize it by adding it into iOS, but they are not exclusive to iOS. Emoji support has been fairly spotty on platforms beyond iOS, but it's getting better. I think Android has full support by now, can't speak for Windows Phone. As for us, OS 10.1 helped improve Emoji support, and 10.2 should bring full support.

    Ohh ok, i guess that makes more sense. I don't use emoticons much so don't really care for it, but hopefully BlackBerry gets on board since so many ppl seem to want it!
