Under Misc> android I find that photo and music folders are duplicated, as are the contents. Sometimes my video and torrent folders too. Any ideas why? This media takes up extra room. See below:

Those are just 'shortcuts' to your regular device folders in which the media actually is. It shows two because if has one capitalised and one lower case version.
Android apps need this folder structure to work.

They do not actually take up any space, nothing is duplicated. And on my phone running 10.3 they are not even duplicated anymore, only the capitalised folders are shown.

I'm on 10.3.0.1154 and this just happened where they ARE actually taking up room on my device. It's copied the entire pictures folder from my SD card taking up 2gb

Those are symlinks, they aren't like windows shortcuts that are only a few KB in size. Symlinks are directly linked and will report the size of whichever folder/folders they're actually linked to (known as the target).

This was happening to me back on 10.2.1 after I restored a backup. I had three instances of each folder,.. which were all actually the same folder.

When I used an autoloader to load 10.3, I skipped the restore (except for some game data), and haven't see any duplicates.

Someone had written that the files aren't actually duplicated and therefore not taking up 2 x the space. However when I go to music app, songs appear duplicated.
