With the recent hacking of iPhones, along with other previous hacks of the iOS device or software, I ask if this sort of attack is isolated to certain devices / mobile OS, BlackBerry in particular.

    Which leads to my question:

Has BlackBerry / RIM ever been subjected to such an attack on either it's device or OS?

Yes - vulnerabilities were found in the PlayBook OS that allowed root access for a while.

But that was patched pretty quickly as I recall and no actual hacks occurred.

To date, I am not aware of any BlackBerry actually being hacked but that's not to say it hasn't happened.

That was by design at the time. Then BlackBerry removed the feature.

    Thanks for the replies.

From what I'm reading both here and across the Internet, it seems that BlackBerry is a VERY secure device / mobile OS.

It then seems so stupid that other industries are now turning to iPhones, which have proved on more than one occasion, that are not safe with data!

    Or candycrush, tombrunner.

It's sad that security is being compromised by childish games.

Security needs to be taken more seriously I think. But, I guess until something else major happens to a company that roles out iPhones will the impact of not taking security seriously be realised.

There will be vulnerabilities that haven't been spotted. Decently secure it may be, but undoubtedly there's also security through obscurity too.

It's just amazing what people are prepared to do (not just with games either). The UK McDonald's Android app asks for access to absolutely everything on the phone, right up to the camera. But people will happily pop it on. They're insane.

Yep android apps are very intrusive at best. When I use to have Nexus 5, tried downloading a decent app for my son's but ended up not. Some of the toddler games required permission to about every aspect of the phone. I question why?

    Point well said.

I guess security also comes down to user awareness.

The user is the first line of defence. Unfortunately, we cannot make every application and system *****-proof, though I probably should not use that term.

Edit: Ha! Apparently CB censors that word!

With the upcoming OS 10.3 and the AppOps feature that comes with Android 4.3, we will have the ability to disable any Android app permission we want, using third-party App Ops applications.

How many hacks, viruses, trojans ect have effected Windows PC's, yet they still have over 90% or the PC market.

You don't see Crysis released on Linux, nor do you see Dark Souls released on Mac.

Windows is just too awesome for gaming.

And Nexusmods don't support Mac I think. Windows's relative openness in file access compared to Mac is what allowed mods to exist, and mods are wildly popular given it's available.

    That, and Microsoft has DirectX.

    Well that is correct.

That's all so an element of spying (for our "security" ofcourse) that we just can't avoid easily.

I've never been one for Android ports, but I truly welcome this added feature / security.

I just meant people don't care that much about security, Not debating platforms. I run Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X, all have there pros and cons.
