    Default BES Express for BB10

We currently run BES Express on our server and only have 4 phones connected to it (2 9330's and 2 9650's). I'm interested in upgrading our phones to BB10 devices, but what will I need on the server side? Will BES Express still work or will we have to pay for full blown BES?

The good news: if you're running Microsoft Exchange you don't need even BESx anymore, since BB10 is an ActiveSync client. No, it doesn't have the policy granularity that BES has, but most small/medium businesses will likely be good with it.

You will need to upgraded to full BES10 and buy CAL's. BES10 should be free and the CAL's will run you about $70 per phone. So assuming your BES-X server has the horsepower to run BES10, you'll just need to pay $280 for licenses to migrate.

Would those licenses be a one time fee?

Does Active Sync work with public contacts? I tried setting it up with the Playbook, but it only pulled in personal contacts and destroyed the battery life on both the Playbook and my bridged phone, so I deleted the account and just use the bridge.

Yes it is my understanding that is a one time fee. Looks like they changed the pricing. You can find it here: https://enterprise.ecomm.webapps.bla...800000001.html

    Quantity Price per CAL
    1 - 4 $99.00
    5 - 9 $85.80
    10 - 49 $69.90
    50 - 99 $65.98
    100 - 499 $59.99
    500 - 999 $55.00
    1000 + $50.00

These licenses can be transferred from phone to phone, right? Say I get a new phone, buy the license for and then upgrade to another phone a few years down the road, would I need another license or can I transfer the license from the old phone?

The licenses are actually per-user, not per-phone. As users leave, you can remove them from BES and free that license back up for the next user.

If an existing user gets a new phone, the BES admin just issues an order for a new Enterprise Activation. When the user starts the Activation on the phone, everything that got backed up to BES will get sucked over to the new phone.

Right for dev but not for commercial Unit. You will need BES and BIS for your BB10.

ActiveSync will be native in BB10 regardless. BIS will be needed, but that's for the phone, nothing extra is required on the exchange server side.

What I don't know is if BIS will have the ActiveSync component, or if it's a separate module of the OS itself.

I was about to reserve my bb10, but then I remembered I was on my company's BES. Which means when I got my BB10 phone, I wont be able to receive my company's emails ? I dont see my company spending more money on the upgrade to BES10 servers...very sad day for me indeed

As long as they allow active sync devices, BB10 will work. Just like how I'm getting my work emails on my PlayBook without Mobile Fusion. It's the same way iPhones and Android devices connect. So it's not the most secure solution and there's no management capability, but it works.

If your company already runs BES, then it probably won't cost much of anything to upgrade to BES10. And the upside is that if you have a BB10 phone you'll be able to take advantage of Balance.

The horsepower to run the newest Microsoft Windows Server (2012) will certainly put a dent in the performance of an existing server unless it is top of the line already. With BlackBerry Enterprise Server 10 Research In Motion should have focused on releasing a VM running QNX and BlackBerry Enterprise Server instead of any reliance upon a third-party operating system. This is especially true in light of the removal of any need for MAPI with the latest BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

What Active Sync exception? BB10 will support Active Sync, IMAP, and POP3. If iPhones and Androids are being used to get e-mail where you work then BB10 should work too. BES10 would just provide an extra level of encryption but if they are using the other platforms now, then you should be fine. The only way you would be in trouble is if they are using some sort of MDM that doesn't support BB10 and won't allow in devices that are not managed by the MDM solution they are using.
