It wasn't supported on the PlayBook OS which made people have to re-encode some videos on their computer before being able to play them.

If you download HD content movies/TV shows from *ahem* interesting websites [not itunes etc], they are usually/mostly [almost always] published in mkv container with mp4 video and AC3 audio codec. AC3 is usually used because it supports 5.1 audio channels [you can still chose stereo as well] and not just stereo, as well as supporting multiple audio streams [languages/commentary] within the same file. Support of AC3 would mean, people can play their local HD movie collection without re-encoding.

Also to add, non HD content is usually published in avi container with xvid video codec and AC3 audio, so it also helps for non-HD content.

let's not take it there. I know I added my 2 cents, but piracy doesn't stop people from going to concerts and buying merchandise. millions are made each big show. a platinum album makes 50k after expenses. sorry everyone, back on topic. I'm glad for ac3 support. more options
