First off I'm not much of a techie so bear with me.

Can the atom be used by BlackBerry for future phones? I'm seeing a lot of small tablets with these SOC and they seem very good. Are there advantages to using a 4 core atom as opposed to what's currently in the passport or is the atom still too demanding on the smaller batteries we get on phones.

Intel processors are x86 architecture and mobile phones use ARM.

You'd have to implement compatibility for the OS to work with those Atom processors.

You'd also have to recompile every single app as well.

So short answer, high unlikely you'll see this happen.

I'd wish it would though, as those processors are quite fast.

The simulator is also missing the bulk of the OS...

Anyway, it's not ARM, and that's a problem.

Just because a lot of the OS isn't delivered with the simulators doesn't mean it couldn't be compiled. The development environment already compiles for x86, as mentioned. It would be a problem for running Android apps from Android app stores, but not for native applications. BlackBerry World already manages applications based on device model.

There are a handful of last generation atom z2xxx cpus being used in android phones and tablets primarily by Lenovo and Asus, respectively. I cannot recall if there are any significant roadblocks in doing so, but I imagine that they cannot be that bad.

Dual core Intel SOCs blow the doors off there ARM Quad-Core counter parts. The newer ones coming out now even better. Yes 64bit SOCs also.
