Official PlayBook .bars that work on the Dev Alpha
A lot of people have been talking about using the android player to get better functionality out of the Dev Alpha. I say screw that, use actual RIM apps.
If you have a backup copy of any of the PlayBook OSes, the following .bars from itwillshould work on your Dev Alpha:
WARNING! Many of these CANNOT be uninstalled without a device wipe (which removes the new Android Player as well). Do NOT sideload these unless you're sure you want them!
Also, many of these bars have screen resolution issues.
Messages
Music
Pictures
Videos
Calculator
Clock
Calendar
Contacts
Voice Notes
Facebook (not available from the latest 2.0.1)
Press Reader
Zinio
Weather
App World launches and loads, but I haven't been able to download anything using it.
Android Player works, but the one on the dev alpha is better than the PlayBook one.
Bing Maps works as a launcher
Video chat might work but it's not installed with Desktop Manager so I don't have a 2.0 bar for it; the 1.0 bar doesn't work.
Before you ask, no, Docs To Go, Bridge, Adobe, FIle Manager, and pretty much anything listed there doesn't work, or at least didn't work for me.
I imagine a list of these files will be available online soon enough, or RIM might give us an update. I'll host them and make them available via OpenSourceBB.com – OSBB ← BlackBerry hybrids, news, opinion and resources. Your PlayBook headquarters probably tomorrow. - 05-03-2012, 09:25 AM #2
Great post Scrid - any chance of pulling the Android Player out of the dev build for sideloading or are the backups encrypted on these builds already?

we know Scrid will do that over the weekend

I thought the encryption was happening on the App World level?
We'll find out when DM 7.1 is out I guess.
Hopefully when they take Jam on the road they'll go somewhere near you guys and hand out some dev alphas. - 05-03-2012, 09:47 AM #7

The PlayBook pdf reader didn't work on it (nor did docs to go) but I imagine an android pdf reader would work. Also, the browser can handle pdf files.
