How much does the dev alpha weigh?
Does any one have an accurate scale (to the gram)?
If this was originally intended to be the Colt, then maybe the weight tells us something about the engineering (as opposed to something designed from the outset to be a prototype where the requirement is not as stringent) - 05-08-2012, 01:09 PM #2
I don't have an accurate weight, but it's definitely very light.

Not accurate to the gram, but close... I get 135g for the Alpha. For comparison, the PlayBook measures in at 420g on the same scale. I'd call both measurements +/-5g.

And by the way, I don't think knowing the weight will necessarily help much... the battery is likely a significant part of the weight, and I suspect they threw a cheapie smaller battery into this as it's not a consumer product but is just for development purposes.

Thanks Peter. I agree that typically a prototype/developer product may not be representative. In this case, though, the Dev Alpha is rumored to be the Colt which was allegedly intended to be the first commercial BB10 device (before being shelved in favour of the London)

MisterMe11, it is the Colt, definitely, but that doesn't mean they didn't replace whatever battery the Colt would have had with something lesser (and cheaper).

- It's complicated...

Same as above.. just under 5 ounces... 135/140 grams.
It definitely feels *light* given the size of the device, which is pretty big.
Not sure on the battery size in it, but definitely hope the first BB10 phone has a nice big battery.Kevin Michaluk

My calculations using info reported via Battery Guru suggest it is about 1400mAh (compare the PB with about 4800mAh*). Someone posted elsewhere that a RIM speaker at BB10 Jam mentioned the same figure.
* PB is nominally 5400mAh but the actual value is closer to 4800.Battery Guru for BB10 tracks voltage, power, battery health. (Also on the PlayBook.) White Noise helps you sleep or concentrate.

I am happy with the battery life so far, well with one device...
Out of the 2 Dev Alphas in front of me here (1 is mine for my own App World apps while the other is a shared device from work for enterprise web app development) work's operates as expected (WWAN works, doesn't go unresponsive, etc.) and gets quite good battery run time. But my device with rarely working WWAN, SIM usually has an exclamation mark, display locks on re-orientation after a resume, no phone number showing for SIM, etc.) seems to get very unpredictable battery life where it will often completely die within 4 hours without being touched (and no, I have not side-loaded any apps to that one as it is not really stable enough to test with the whole suspend/resume/reorientation issue).
