So I was checking BlackBerry World, and it showed there's an update for Skype.

However, it's somewhat weird. The app itself now has a "Preview" tag in the app name, and when it starts, it says Google Play Services is not installed and the app "cannot be used", but I was able to make a call. It did however crashed when I hung up. There's also now constantly a notification for Skype in the hub.

Anyone else see this too?

Are you sure you didnt accidentally update is using snap or google play store? Or have auto update on from those two.

Nope, BlackBerry World. I disabled all other store updates.

Yup, happened to me as well. At first it was prompting to me update the app through 1Mobile. I got so confused & couldn't even remember where I DL'd it (BlackBerry World or 1Mobile). I deleted the app in the end because of the annoying Hub notification.

I later reinstalled it via BlackBerry World.

I don't see an update for Skype in BlackBerry World yet.

Today Skype pushed a fix to a major bug that was causing the app to crash when someone sent a particular message to you. I suspect that, in their rush to get the fix pushed out, they uploaded the wrong version to BlackBerry World. Someone without much knowledge of BB10 probably figured that uploading the Google Play version should take care of it.

Considering how far behind the app has fallen with updates (this update's 5.4, last version on BBW was 4.9), I'd be pretty surprised if this was fixed anytime soon - but hey, you never know.

When I uninstalled Google Play Store it stopped nagging about Google services.. looks like Skype can 'sense' if the store app is present or not, and when it is- it assumes Google play services exist.

I have just updated it from BBW. It is now not showing the "Preview " word on its title.

In my case it doesn't ask for Google Play Service even though I have Snap installed. However, by the looks of its Security permission screen, this looks like an Android port (cannot change the permissions).

Same happened with me, updated Skype though BlackBerry World, and got the Google play services is not supported by your device and Google play services has stopped notification, but I was also able to make calls. I think it's the android version of Skype being pushed via BlackBerry World.
