I am guessing here but here goes: I would assume that it installs all of the maps to your device. Then only uses your GPS to locate you, which would not use data. And places that on the map and shows you where you are. How large is the app?? That would give you some hints.

Where as say Google Maps only downloads the map of your current area from the web...if you lose service in a bad area google maps still works as far as the blue dot moving on the screen, but you get the blank refresh background pictures. I have had it happen on google maps so that is where I get my guess from.

Oh ya I understand the concept. Curiosity kills my wallet. Downloaded it lol. Turns out its an android port. Will add my reviews later for anybody else interested
Right of the bat though I can say this thing is very advanced. Packed with features and customization. I imagine will take me a fair amount of time to get it dialed in and learn everything. I like that But I've seen less complicated thinfs frustrate your average low tech savvy person

This was available for the PB for quite some time as well. Droid port of Open Street Maps, OSMAND
    First a Storm 2, then a Torch 9800, now a Z10 and Playbook 16g
    Nicely nice!
