Tour on new Telus / Bell HSPA Network
Hey,
I've got a Tour on Telus.
The Tour has a Sim card slot, and the specs on the phone say that it's HSPA compatible. BlackBerry - Tour 9630 Specs – Blackberry Tour Specifications
Couldn't I get a Telus Sim card and use it on my phone instead of their CDMA network??? I called and they said no, but I'm wondering if that's just because I was talking to someone that didn't know what they're talking about? - 11-06-2009, 03:35 PM #2
it won't work there are different frequencies that hspa runs on, im not sure the exact numbers but the north american hspa network is different from that of what your tour can pick up. Its meant for if your traveling in europe. it works on their hspa frequency over there.
as metallica put it, its sad but true......
being a storm owner im kinda POed about it but hey, gotta keep up with the times i guess, if you got the money to fork out for it. But if you do decide to upgrade you will be good for a long time as far as network goes. I can't see them spending another billion dollars pretty well to upgrade to a 5G style network lol.O/S 6.0.0.4618

both posts above me are correct, you wont even be able to unlock it and use it on our cdma because first cdma doesnt run on sim and the tour isnt on the compatible list (reason being is above me )

according to blackberry's website the Tour can be used on both 850 and 1900 GSM/GPRS networks... is this info incorrect...
# Quad-Band: 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE networks
# Single-Band: 2100 MHz UMTS/HSPA networks
# Dual-Band: 800/1900 MHz CDMA/EVDO Rev A networks - 11-07-2009, 11:05 PM #6

I use my Tour on AT&T working in the USA, however I do not get 3G. Bell/Telus do not have a GSM/EDGE network to fall back on unfortunatly, thus why only 3G devices will work on the new network.

correct! different sim card
I actually had the tour 9630 with bell on the cdma network and went into the store for a new sim card. they didn't know so they actually tried putting one in and, no go. the above is correct, the hspa frequency is different than it is in europe. now that being said, i have had better signal in many places with my tour on the cdma, than the bold 9700 i upgraded to. i didn't get to do a comparison of the two, for i sold my tour figuring the hspa network would be much faster. I have to say i don't even notice a difference so far. And my favourite app (bbgpsgolf) won't connect to the site and asks for apn to be set. every other app i use just works, and does not ask this. I even called bell and got the apn info, still no go. although i do have an unlocked Rogers Bold9700, but i don't see how that would be a problem when everything else works..
i like that it has the touchpad, and wi-fi, but aside from that sometimes i wish i saved my money and kept the tour.
